With an increasing number of alleged victims coming forward and new allegations of child abuse emerging, some legal experts predict that civil lawsuits are a likely outcome of the child-sex abuse scandal enveloping Penn State.
According to the Associated Press, child abuse lawyers representing alleged victims of Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator for the college's renowned football team, have begun speaking out in recent weeks. In addition to criminal charges, the AP writes that civil lawsuits may be “inevitable” once more information has been gathered.
Although top staff at Penn State were reported to have known about the alleged child abuse against eight boys by Sandusky, they failed to immediately notify authorities. The ensuing scandal has led to the departures of college President Graham Spanier and longtime football coach Joe Paterno.
