Fourteen California hospitals have been assessed administrative penalties by the state Department of Public Health after cases of medical misdiagnosis or negligence and noncompliance with licensing requirements were found that potentially caused serious injury or death to patients.
Two hospitals were assessed penalties of $100,000, the highest given to any of the 14 hospitals. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla was fined for failing to ensure the health and safety of a patient after not following the proper surgical policies and procedures. As a result, the patient had to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object.
Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center also received a $100,000 administrative penalty. It was also cited for failing to ensure the health and safety of a patient by not following surgical policies and procedures after a patient was forced to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object.
The amounts of the other administrative penalties that were doled out by the CDCH were as follows: $75,000 to Torrance Memorial Medical Center and UCSF Medical Center; $50,000 to Fresno Surgical Hospital, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Kaiser Foundation Hospital – South San Francisco, Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, San Francisco General Hospital, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Sutter Solano Medical Center, and Ventura County Medical Center; and $25,000 to LAC+USC Medical Center.
