A number of studies have suggested that increased usage of acetaminophen pain relievers in recent decades may be connected to a drastic worldwide increase of childhood asthma seen over the same time period.
Since 1998, more than 20 studies have suggested that the use of acetaminophen may have played a role in the sharp increase in asthma cases that have been seen since the 1980s. One study analyzed more than 200,000 children and found an increased risk among those who had taken acetaminophen, The New York Times reports. Other studies have found the link between the acetaminophen and asthma in children whose mothers took the painkiller during pregnancy, as well as adults.
“Almost every study that’s looked for it has found a dose-response relationship between acetaminophen use and asthma,” said Dr. John T. McBride, a pediatrician at Akron Children’s Hospital in Ohio. “The association is incredibly consistent across age, geography and culture.”
