A recent mix-up of two different drugs with similar names has prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a warning to healthcare professionals.
According to Reuters, Durasal is a wart remover that has been mixed up in a number of cases with Durezol, a steroidal eye drop used as a treatment for pain and inflammation after eye surgery. A mix-up of the two drugs in a pharmacy that resulted in the patient taking home the real medication had resulted in “serious injury,”
The FDA attempts to vary the names of newly approved drugs to avoid confusion as part of the drug approval process. However, because Durasal was not FDA approved, its name did not go through the FDA naming process.
Durasal’s drug maker has not complied with requests from the FDA to remove the product from the market, nor has it issued a drug recall to warn consumers of the risk the drug poses to them.
