A Florida couple has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against a hospital they claim acted in negligence and led to their child being born with cerebral palsy.
According to the TC Palm, Melissa and Conrad Guettler allege that the staff at Indian River Medical Center failed to act properly on warning signs during the 2008 birth of their son. During an emergency cesarean section that was ordered hours after Guettler had been admitted to the hospital and began exhibiting symptoms that something was wrong, doctors discovered her son had not been breathing in the womb.
While doctors were able to get the newborn breathing, he developed cerebral palsy because of the ordeal.
The medical malpractice lawsuit is claiming the hospital acted in negligence, and is seeking unspecified damages for the birth injury, as well as the loss of Melissa’s reproductive organs that also occurred as the result of the botched procedure.
