The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that an advisory panel convened by the agency found the the risks of birth control medications like Yaz and Yasmin were outweighed by their benefits. What it failed to disclose: three of the panel members may have been biased in their decision.
According to the Wall Street Journal, three of the FDA advisory panel members who voted to support the usage of drospirenone birth control pills such as Yaz and Yasmin have clear ties to Bayer.
Bayer is the manufacturer of the birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin.
The three panel members are doctors and who had previously served as consultants, speakers, or researchers for Bayer. Each voted in favor of the birth control pills, saying that the benefits of the drugs outweighed the blood-clot risk associated with them.
The panel members’ ties to Bayer were revealed in documents that were unsealed for litigation in a case against the drug maker regarding the dangers associated with its birth control pills.
The advisory panel also ruled in favor of changing the labels on Yaz and Yasmin to better indicate a higher risk of blood clots. Two of the board members with ties to Bayer voted in favor of the label changes.
