A number of Indianapolis hotel workers have filed a class-action wage and hour lawsuit against ten hotels and a labor staffing agency over payments they claim they never rightfully received.
According to Huffington Post, more than a dozen workers filed the wage violation lawsuit against Embassy Suites, Marriott, Westin, Hyatt, Holiday Inn, and Omni properties (all parent companies of hotels the workers were employed at), as well as the labor agency Hospitality Staffing Solutions (HSS). The workers claim that they were hired through HSS to work at the Indianapolis-area hotels as housekeepers, dishwashers, and bussers.
However, they also allege that they - and perhaps close to one thousand more workers in similar positions - were forced to work through their unpaid breaks and once they were off the clock. As a result, many of them ended up working for well below the required minimum wage $7.25 per hour.
These illegal pay cuts were done with the knowledge of hotel management, the lawsuit also claims.
HSS has been the subject of similar wage violation lawsuits in the past. The Post also references a lawsuit that was brought against the staffing agency by a former manager of a Pittsburgh hotel who claimed he was fired for supporting workers who were being paid unfairly.
