A Chinese drywall lawsuit has been filed by a Florida couple who claim a home seller failed to inform them of toxic wallboard that had been installed in the house they purchased.
According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Elcio Pacheco Jr and his wife Cintia Altheman purchased a home in March 2011 without knowing there was Chinese drywall installed in it. The couple said the toxic drywall has caused them and their three-year-old son to become sick, and theyaccuse the people who sold them the house of "wrongful conduct in misrepresenting and concealing the condition of the property."
A city inspector reported "visible abnormal corrosion and a black sooty coating" in the home. Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co. - the maker of the drywall - found evidence themselves of the toxic building material in the home, according to Pacheco.
Chinese drywall is known to corrode copper pipes, wiring, metals and, appliances. It also usually gives off a “rotten egg” scent. Homes that were built or remodeled from 2000 to 2009 may be at risk for having the defective drywall, according to federal officials.
