The family of a Connecticut boy has filed a medical negligence lawsuit against his pediatrician claiming the doctor failed to diagnose him with bacterial meningitis, a decision that led to the child losing his eyesight.
According to the Hartford Courant, Katherine Mlodzinski claims that Dr. Judy Huang-Bulger failed to recognize his illness and diagnosed Adam with an ear infection. The family returned to the health clinic several times only to be sent away.
On November 3, 2009, her son, Adam, was found unresponsive at their home and was subsequently rushed to the hospital. He laid in a coma and was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. Adam awoke weeks later only to find that he lost his eyesight.
The family claims that "the delay in treatment caused the meningitis to worsen, the brain infection to worsen, and now Adam is blind." They also contend that the disease could have been stopped if he was sent to an emergency room and given a spinal tap that would have revealed his illness.
The medical negligence lawsuit that was filed on January 9th further alleges that Adam’s complaints were ignored when he presented them to the staff at Healthwise Medical Associate, doing business at the time as Vernon Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.
Adam also suffered a fever, impaired speech, respiratory failure, impaired hearing, brain damage, seizures and a systematic bacterial infection, according to the complaint. He has had to relearn how to eat, walk and talk and is undergoing rehabilitation.
