A plaintiff looking to bring the first Avandia liability lawsuit to trial in the United States is one of the many individuals with a pending lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline PLC that have recently had their cases settled.
According to Law 360 (subscription required), GSK recently announced that it had settled a majority of the dangerous drug lawsuits that had been brought against it relating to their diabetes drug Avandia, the use of which has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
Janet Johnson was one of the plaintiffs who had their dangerous drug lawsuit settled. She had been slated to bring the first Avandia liability lawsuit to trial in the U.S., with jury selection for her trial having begun one week before the settlement.
While the exact number of Avandia lawsuits that were settled by GSK was not immediately known, Law 360 reported that more than 20,000 Avandia lawsuits have been brought throughout the country.
GSK also announced that it had agreed to pay $3 billion to end investigations by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts and the U.S Department of Justice that that probed its marketing of Avandia.
