Johnson & Johnson has agreed to a $158 million settlement in a dangerous drug lawsuit that alleged it overstated the safety of an antipsychotic drug and improperly influenced medical professionals to prescribe the medication.
According to the Associated Press, Allen Jones, a former employee of the Office of Inspector General in Pennsylvania, originally filed the dangerous drug lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson and some of its subsidiaries in 2004 Texas joined the lawsuit in 2006. Jones claimed the company committed fraud against Medicaid by making false statements about the effectiveness, cost, and safety of the schizophrenia drug Risperdal, compared to other drugs during 1994-2008.
The settlement will be paid by the Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. unit of Johnson & Johnson and will resolve all claims in Texas.
