Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada Inc. has issued new safety information for the blood pressure drug Tekturna.
According to Health Canada, the new safety information comes after a clinical study indicated a higher occurrence of strokes, hyperkalemia, serious renal complications and hypotension in patients who used Tekturna.
The health issues were linked to, aliskren, a component of Tekturna and other high blood pressure drugs. In Canada the drug is sold under the brand names Rasilez and Rasilez HTC.
Novartis is advising patients with type 2 diabetes to refrain from taking Tekturna in combination with other drugs, such as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) for the treatment of hypertension.
