Bisphenol-A (BPA) exposure continues to raise concerns as research continues to suggest that it is dangerous, and the nonprofit teaching group The Center for Progressive Reform (CPR) is accusing federal regulators of dragging their feet on the matter and not doing enough to protect the public from it the chemicall.
According to iWatch News, CPR said that regulator’s efforts have been “meager” and that much more should be done. The group also believes that the FDA should ban BPA in all products that come in contact with food. It also wants the EPA to require warning labels and ban certain uses of the chemical.
Recent studies have shown that BPA may interfere with the body’s hormone system and brain. Previous studies have linked BPA to irreversible side effects such as altered cognitive functions. Eleven states in the U.S. have banned the use of the chemical in certain products, including children’s’ goods and baby bottles. China, Canada and the European Union also have similar bans.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently conducting research on BPA, while the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) may soon propose a rule that would require more testing of the chemical.
