Starbucks Corp. has agreed to pay $7.5 million to former and current employees in its Massachusetts stores who claim their tips were unlawfully shared with shift supervisors.
According to Law360 (subscription required), baristas claimed in the lawsuit that tips should not have been shared with their supervisors. This led to the agreement that Starbucks owed them $7.5 million in tips that shift supervisors took from March 2005 to March 2008.
The U.S. district court also ruled that the company’s tip sharing policy violated state law.
The class action included nearly 11,000 baristas who worked across 150 locations throughout Massachusetts.
