A new study suggests that antiretroviral prophylaxis, a drug used prevent pregnant from transmitting HIV to their babies, may cause cleft lip and palate in newborns.
News Medical reports that the study, published in the January issue of Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, examined five years of information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Events Reporting System (AERS). Twenty-six events of cleft lip and palate were found and associated with seven antiviral drugs, including lamivudine and efavirenz.
Cleft lip and palate are congenital malformations that can be caused by medications, environmental factors, and/or genetics.
