A Florida jury has awarded $177 million to the family of a man who suffered severe injuries as the result of medical malpractice following a gastric bypass surgery procedure.
According to WJXT-TV Jacksonville, Clay Chandler had gastric bypass surgery in May 2007 at Memorial Hospital to help him lose weight. However, after surgery he began experiencing undiagnosed complications that left him unable to walk, speak clearly, clean or feed himself.
The medical malpractice lawsuit claimed that Chandler suffered complications because of negligence and poor patient care after his weight-loss surgery that included bed sores and brain damage. The complaint also alleged that the doctor involved was at fault and that the hospital committed fraud when it said the doctor had been certified by a particular medical organization when he had not been.
The verdict is the largest medical malpractice ruling in the history of Jacksonville, Florida.
