The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating incidents of unintended airbag deployment in 2002 and 2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles.
According to Consumer Reports, the NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigations found incidents of unintentional airbag deployment in Liberty the that resulted in 50 injuries. Forty-five of the incidents involved the driver and front passenger airbag, while 42 involved just the front driver airbag. All of the incidents occurred either during the startup of the Jeep Liberty vehicles or while it was on the road.
An inspection of the airbag systems by Jeep’s parent company Chrysler showed “that an internal electronic circuit (an ASIC chip) that controls air bag deployment failed due to an electrical over stress condition, possibly caused by a transient voltage spike.”
Chrysler is in the process of finding out the potential root causes of the cause for electric over stress and component failure.
