California Attorney General Kamela Harris has announced that GIB LLC will settle a product liability lawsuit filed by the state accusing it of using deceptive advertising for its popular hair-straightening products.
According to the Washington Post, the Attorney General’s office alleged that GIB LLC falsely advertised their Brazilian Blowout Acai Smoothing Solution and Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Solution by labeling them as being formaldehyde free when they were not.
The settlement requires the company to supply salons with a pamphlet outlining recommended safety measures for the keratin treatment products, and also notify consumers that the two products emit formaldehyde gas that can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs. The company must also have all their products tested for all toxic substances in a state-approved lab, and pay $600,000 in penalties for failing to inform consumers that its products have chemicals that might cause cancer.
The Brazilian Blowout first became popular in Brazil and is a brand of keratin hair smoothers. It has been available in U.S. salons for several years.
