A new study suggests that women who are postmenopausal and regularly use proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are at an increased risk for experiencing a hip fracture.
According to MedPage Today, researchers from Harvard Medical School analyzed data from 79,899 postmenopausal women regarding their health and lifestyle. They found that the women’s risk for a hip fracture was increased by 35 percent in women who took PPIs for at least two years when compared to women who never used them. The longer the women took the drugs, the higher their risk of a hip fracture was.
Researchers also found that the risk for a hip fracture increased by more than half in women who had a history of smoking. They concluded that the findings “provide compelling evidence of hip fracture risk in women who used PPIs, according to the article.
