GlaxoSmithKline has reportedly agreed to pay $3 billion to settle more than 20,000 Avandia lawsuits over claims that the company illegally marketed the diabetes medication.
According to Bloomberg, the dangerous drug lawsuits alleged that Avandia use led to an increased risk of heart attacks. The settlements are part of the drugmaker’s efforts to resolve legal problems that stretch back over the last 10 years.
The company previously agreed to pay at least $700 million to settle more 15,000 claims from other patients who also alleged that Avandia cause heart attacks and strokes, reports the article.
In 2010, GlaxoSmithKline said it would no longer promote Avandia around the world after regulators said the drug would be taken off the European market. U.S. sales were also limited after studies linked the medication to increased risk of heart attacks.
