FTC Seeks Stricter Consumer Privacy Rules

Tougher consumer privacy rules appear likely in the wake of new recommendations released this week by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The ongoing debate over privacy rights–which has landed major companies such as Google and Facebook in court – is driving the agency’s recommendations, which include a request for Congress to regulate the so-called data brokers.

Data brokers are companies that collect and sell financial and personal information about millions of consumers from offline and online sources. The legislation proposed would give customers access to the data collected and allow them to update and correct it.

The report also made clear to advertising and technology companies the importance of providing a “Do Not Track” mechanism so consumers can opt out of having their online activity monitored and shared.
