Cylert Dangers

In October of 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the risk of liver damage or failure from taking Cylert was greater than the benefits it provided. Cylert, generically known as pemoline, is used in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The report followed 13 reports of liver failure related to Cylert. All these cases led to either transplant or death within four weeks of the start of symptoms. The FDA has also received almost 200 reports of other adverse side effects.

Cylert and other stimulants of its kind may cause behavioral disturbances and thought disorders in psychotic children. The drug may also cause motor and vocal tics and Tourette's syndrome.

About 117,000 Cylert prescriptions were issued in the U.S. last year.

Abbott, the company manufacturing Cylert, and all companies manufacturing generic versions have agreed to stop sales and marketing of the drug.

According to Public Citizen, there are other drugs on the market that work as well as Cylert without the dangerous side effect.
