The FDA has announced a new black box warning for Plavix users.
The warning is to notify patients that the drug can be less effective in patients who can't metabolize the drug and convert it into its active form.
Plavix is supposed to reduce the risk of heart attack, unstable angina, stroke, and cardiovascular death in patients with cardiovascular disease by making platelets less likely to form blood clots. Plavix doesn't offer these effects until it is metabolized by the liver enzyme, CYP2C19. Patients who do not have full function of their CYP2C19 are not able to metabolize Plavix, making the drug less effective.
