Lipitor Use May Cause Increased Risk of Diabetes

About Lipitor

Lipitor® (generically known as Atorvastatin) has been linked to an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes in women. Lipitor is used to manage high levels of cholesterol by blocking enzymes that the liver uses to produce cholesterol. A woman’s risk of Type 2 Diabetes increases with Lipitor dosage levels. The risk is even higher for women who fit any or all of the following criteria:

  • Are obese or have excess weight
  • Are inactive
  • Have high blood sugar
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have high triglycerides
  • Have a family history of Type 2 Diabetes

In 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration forced Lipitor’s manufacturer to update their warning label to alert users of the increased risk of diabetes. Additionally, several clinical trials have indicated a link between Lipitor usage and the development of Type 2 Diabetes in women whose families had no prior history of the disease.
