Obesity Lap Bands May Cause More Complications Than Weight Loss

Almost half of patients undergoing gastric banding for obesity needed to have the device removed, according to a study that found the treatment caused more complications than weight loss. About 60 percent of the 82 patients with the device, Allergan Inc.’s Lap-Band, followed over 12 years or more needed additional operations, according to a study by Belgian researchers published online today by the Archives of Surgery. Baristas' Suit Against Starbucks May Proceed as Class Action in Mass. Federal Court

A Boston federal judge has certified a Massachusetts class action against Starbucks Corp. over its tip policy on the same day plaintiffs appealed a New York federal court's judgment on the same policy to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2d Circuit. A March 18 order by District Judge Nathaniel Gorton in Matamoros v. Starbucks Corp. certified a class action against the coffee company for allegedly violating the Massachusetts Tips Law. Learn more. U.S. Probes Safety Testing on Pool Drain Covers

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating whether young swimmers could be at risk for getting trapped in improperly tested pool drains. The commission said it discovered some laboratories may not have correctly tested the "flow rating'' of pool and spa drain covers, giving them improper certification. Learn more. FULL POST

DePuy Recalled Hip Device Lawsuit Filed in San Antonio, Texas

Garrett Mann filed on Friday against Johnson & Johnson, Inc. and DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. in federal court in San Antonio, Texas seeking compensation for injuries caused by the failure of the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular Hip Replacement System that has been recalled. On January 28, 2009, Mann underwent hip replacement surgery. A DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System with a DePuy S-ROM femoral stem was implanted in his right hip. Learn more. FULL POST
