Exercising With Your Special Needs Child
Posted by George Passwater in Family Life on March 11, 2010
Exercise is good for everyone. It is good for you, me and even your special needs child; even just minutes a day will help.
Here are a few reasons and ways to include exercise for you and your child:
Stress Relief and Entertainment
Day in and day out, raising a child with special needs has its ups and downs. Another thing that builds up is stress; there is a lot of that.
Exercise is a wonderful way to lower those stress levels while entertaining your child. Adding different and fun ways to exercise keeps your child interested and helps you burn away unneeded stress. Here are a few ways to help you get started:
- Music – play music while you workout to pump up the mood.
- Change the Scenery – Mix things up at the gym, home or outside.
- Workout With Video Games – Gaming systems like the Nintendo Wii are great for active playing.
- Dancing – Along with music or video games, incorporate some dancing with things like dance games and just dancing to music.
- Yoga – There are some great programs for parents and children that are also great exercise for the body and mind.
Therapy Help and Learning
Exercise plays a big part in staying healthy, but it also helps your child with their therapies. The added abilities they get from exercising with you will help them with their physical, occupational and even speech therapies. For instance, yoga would strengthen and stretch muscles to help with physical therapy.
Exercise improves our physical, mental and emotional health, but did you know it helps your child learn too? They learn about being active and think of exercise as something they have fun doing and will become healthier while doing it.
Exercise helps our health as well as our emotional well-being. Don’t complain that you are unable or don’t have time to exercise. Exercise is good for you and your child – the health benefits outweigh any reason not to exercise.
