The weight loss drug Meridia® has been linked to heart attacks and strokes in high-risk patients. The drug, which has been on the market since the 1990s, was linked to blood pressure rise by an advisory panel as far back as 1996 but it wasn't until a 2010 report in the New England Journal of Medicine finding similar results that the FDA asked the parent company Abbott Laboratories to recall Meridia.

Meridia is a prescription drug usually taken orally, once a day, meant to boost weight loss among severely overweight patients. Meridia is also known generically as sibutramine.
