U.S. to Ban Drop-Side Cribs in Overhaul of Child-Safety Rules

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, citing 153 deaths in the four years preceding July of 2010, voted to ban drop-side cribs in the agency’s first across-the-board overhaul of regulations for infant beds in almost three decades. The agency has issued warnings to parents about the suffocation and strangling risks associated with all drop-side cribs as companies recalled more than 9 million of the items in a five-year period.

Crib injuries can happen when the cribs’ drop-side plastic hardware breaks, deforms, or parts become missing. Injuries that can occur include:

  • Shoulder injuries
  • Brain damage due to asphyxiation
  • Bone fractures
  • Death

In recent years, the following manufacturers, specifically, had defective cribs recalled after crib injuries, or even crib deaths, were reported:

  • Jardine
  • Kolkraft
  • Simplicity
  • Graco
  • Delta
  • Dorel/Safety First
  • Generation 2 & ChildSigns
