The manufacturer has issued a voluntary CooperVision Avaira® Toric contact lens recall, and the FDA has demanded the company broaden its communications about the recall.
Injuries from Defective CooperVision Contact Lenses
There have been reports of eye problems including, but not limited to the following
- Eye irritation
- Blurred and impaired vision
- Excruciating pain
- Torn corneas
Associated with defective Avaira Toric contact lenses manufactured by CooperVision Inc. and sold at retail locations across the U.S. There was a “stealth” recall issued by the company on 8/19/11 due to the “unintended presence of a residue on certain lenses.” A second announcement, related to the defective CooperVision contact lenses recall, was issued on 10/12/11.
The residue found on the lens could result in serious eye injury, impaired vision, or torn corneas.
