The British Medical Journal Study: Yaz Ingredient Causes Life-Threatening Side Effects

Yaz lawsuits, Yaz side effectsIn May of 2009 a study conducted by the British Medical Journal indicated that the progestin in Yaz and Yasmin, drospirenone, is riskier than the progesterone ingredient found in other birth control bills. The study examined 1,524 patients on the birth control pill and 1,760 who were not.

The study found that the patients on the pill had a 5-fold increase in dangerous blood clots — called venous thrombosis. With women taking drospirenone, there was a 6.3-fold risk of blood clots. Women taking Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella, the only birth control pills on the market containing drospirenone, experience blood clotting on Yaz, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, heart attack from Yaz, stroke from Yaz, Yaz death, and other Yaz symptoms and side effects.

Results Are Evidence of Yaz Side Effects

The authors of the study concluded that, given the large number of women who take birth control pills (estimated at 100 million worldwide), even the smallest increase in the incidence of blood clots will affect many. The results of the study revealed that women should choose an oral contraceptive based on the smallest increase of side effects, such as risk of venous thrombosis. The lowest risk of blood clots among the available combined oral contraceptives was from pills containing a low dose of estrogen and the progestin levonorgestrel, which is found in Seasonique, a drug not manufactured by Bayer.

The results of this study make it clear that women who take birth control pills should discuss their options with their doctor in order to assume the smallest possible risk to their health, given their medical history and risk factors.

Have you tried many different birth control pills, including Yaz, Yasmine, and Ocella? What were your experiences, good and bad?
