The British Medical Journal Study: Yaz Ingredient Causes Life-Threatening Side Effects

In May of 2009 a study conducted by the British Medical Journal indicated that the progestin in Yaz and Yasmin, drospirenone, is riskier than the progesterone ingredient found in other birth control bills. The study examined 1,524 patients on the birth control pill and 1,760 who were not. The study found that the patients on the pill had a 5-fold increase in dangerous blood clots — called venous thrombosis. With women taking drospirenone, there was a 6.3-fold risk of blood clots.
