When a blood clot (thrombus) develops in one of these veins, it can block the flow of blood and cause pain, swelling, warmth and possibly red skin over the affected area. This inflammation caused by the clot is called thrombophlebitis.
Pulmonary Embolism
A severe complication of deep vein thrombosis occurs when a clot breaks loose and moves (embolizes) through the bloodstream to the lungs, and becomes lodged in the pulmonary arteries. The resulting pulmonary embolism causes difficulty breathing and can result in death if the blockage is significant.
