Blood clots cause different symptoms depending upon where they are in the body:
- Lung: You may experience sharp pain in the chest, rapid heartbeat, coughing up blood, shortness of breath and low-grade fever.
- Arm or Leg: An arterial clot may cause sudden pain, swelling and a blue tinge to the skin. In a vein it may cause swelling and tenderness.
- Brain: Brain clots cause visual disturbances, weakness on one side of the body, seizure and speech impairment. A clot in the brain could lead to stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
- Heart: A clot in the heart will give you chest pain, and it can lead to a heart attack. Blood clots that form in the heart can travel anywhere in the body through the arteries or veins.
- Abdomen: You may feel severe abdominal pain, vomiting and/or diarrhea.
