A former plumber dying of mesothelioma has launched a lawsuit to obtain compensation for his illness. Mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs and heart (and in rare cases, the abdomen) is caused by exposure to asbestos.
The patient is a 59-year-old plumber from Cornwall, England named Tony Cock. When diagnosed with mesothelioma in July 2012, he was told he had between three and six months to live. He believes his mesothelioma was caused in his time working at telecommunications firm Cable and Wireless, where he spent years painting asbestos lagging on pipes.
“It was a messy job but you did not realize what you were working with, as a recent story on the Local World Cornwall region Web site notes. In the 1970s, the public didn’t perceive asbestos as a major threat. There wasn’t really any health and safetythe only protection you got was a boiler suit,” said Cock. But asbestos has a long reach. Doctors diagnosed his mesothelioma after Cock contracted pneumonia and had to have fluids drained from his lung. That led to a biopsy that found the mesothelioma.
His mesothelioma solicitors are actively investigating the claim. “We would very much like to speak to anyone who worked at the Cable and Wireless site at Porthcurno during the ’70s and ’80s,” said Cock’s mesothelioma solicitor.
