Virginia has become the latest state to officially recognize September 26 as Mesothelioma Awareness Day.
Legislation to officially designate September 26 as Mesothelioma Awareness Day was initiated by state house delegate Mark Sickles (D-Franconia) and Robena Reid, a mesothelioma advocate whose mother passed away from mesothelioma.
The proclamation brought by Sickles and Reid was passed by the state house and senate in February. The formal announcement of the state’s acceptance of Mesothelioma Awareness Day was attended by both state officials and representatives from the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF).
We are grateful to the Virginia Legislature for bringing much-needed attention to this often neglected cancer, and we hope this will prompt Virginians, as well as others, to learn more about this dangerous disease, said Kathy Wiedemer, the executive director of MARF.
Virginia is the eleventh state to recognize Mesothelioma Awareness Day.
