Young Kim Taking on Asbestos Fight Following Death of Boyfriend Malcolm McLaren

The girlfriend of a rock and roll legend who unfortunately succumbed to mesothelioma in 2010 is speaking out against the governments around the world that are hesitating to ban the use of asbestos.

Widely known by those in the music industry as the “godfather” of punk rock, Malcolm McLaren helped to launch the careers of the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistol by acting as their manager during the 1970s.

However, years of working in sometimes-shoddy concert venues and punk-rock shops he owned in England led to him being exposed to asbestos and eventually developing mesothelioma. On April 8, 2010 at the age of 64, he passed away.

Following his death, Young Kim – McLaren’s girlfriend for the final 12 years of his life as well as his work partner for nine years – has taken on the fight against asbestos as her own. In fact, she feels that deaths such as McLaren’s are the equivalent of a criminal act.

“That people should die because governments knowingly failed to protect their safety is nothing short of homicide,” Kim said during an email correspondence we recently had with her regarding asbestos and mesothelioma.

“From what I understand, once you’ve been exposed to asbestos and have it, there is really nothing that can be done but hope for the best,” she added. “The most important thing I think, however, is to understand that this disease is man-made– due to the use of asbestos, a dangerous and lethal substance. It should not exist.”

Kim also suggested that that governments were the parties that needed to take control of the situation and limit/ban the use of asbestos in their countries. However, she criticized the governments that had received all of the information regarding the dangers of asbestos, yet still did not act in immediately banning the substance. Additionally, she noted that a number of countries where asbestos use is legal also benefit from money received through asbestos production and trade.

“This is particularly reprehensible behavior but unfortunately something that continues to this day by all governments and industries around the world. Perhaps industry can be excused as they are in effect, selfish entities, but governments, like the United States or Europe, which are based on democratic systems, have a duty to protect the people and to regulate such industries,” Kim said. “They should be our watchdogs. Instead, we are constantly being betrayed by their corruption.”

Kim said that she wanted to make eradicating the conditions that lead to diseases such as mesothelioma a top priority in order to keep the number of new cases declining in the years to come.

“We need to have systems in place that prevent the exposure of innocent people to toxic material for the sake of short term profit for industry and corrupt politicians,” she said, “The public needs to be more aware of this and realize that sometimes, to have safety, it may actually involve certain collective sacrifice or inconvenience but long-term it is the only safe way to go.”

For those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer that can be linked to asbestos exposure caused by a product or former employer, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
