$19.1 Million Awarded to Sokolove Law Birth Injury Client

$19.1 Million Awarded to Sokolove Law Michigan Birth Injury Case (October 2026)

Sokolove Law, a national birth injury law firm, is pleased to announce that a federal judge in Michigan awarded $19.1 Million to our clients, a mother and her child who suffered a severe brain injury at birth and was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

The lawsuit alleged that the lack of appropriate prenatal care and monitoring allowed warning signs to go unaddressed in the lead-up to delivery.

The child was diagnosed with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation, and experienced seizures in the days that followed. A cerebral palsy diagnosis came later.

“No family should have to fight this hard for a child whose injury should never have happened,” said Ricky LeBlanc, Managing Attorney of Sokolove Law. “The court recognized this was a preventable injury, and this judgment will help cover the lifelong care this child needs.”

HIE is among the most serious birth injuries and can be the underlying cause of cerebral palsy. In many cases, it can be prevented when prenatal risk factors are identified, and fetal distress is recognized and acted on promptly.

The award is intended to cover the lifelong costs of the child's medical care, therapies, adaptive equipment, and in-home support, as well as compensation for pain and suffering.

The family was represented by Sokolove Law and lead counsel Jesse Reiter and his team at Reiter & Walsh, P.C., ABC Law Centers of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Sokolove Law has fought for families impacted by birth injuries due to medical negligence for more than 45 years and has helped secure over $1.1 Billion on behalf of children with cerebral palsy, HIE, and other preventable injuries nationwide.
