Joseph Trunk practices out of the Alton, Illinois Sokolove Law office, where he focuses on mesothelioma and asbestos litigation. He represents victims seeking compensation after asbestos exposure, helping hold the companies responsible for their illnesses accountable.
Much of his work happens before any courtroom is involved — sitting with clients, piecing together decades-old work histories, and figuring out exactly where and how the exposure occurred.
In 2022, Joseph second-chaired a mesothelioma case in Cook County, Illinois that ended in a multimillion-dollar jury verdict for the family of a pipefitter who passed away after working at commercial and industrial job sites throughout Chicago. It's the kind of outcome that shapes how he talks about his work today.
"Although most cases settle, some need to go in front of a jury. Either way, I want my clients to know I'm ready to see it through," Joseph explained.
That combination of courtroom readiness and case-building has helped Joseph secure dozens of asbestos settlements for clients without a trial, all while keeping him prepared for the ones that do go the distance.
"A lot of what I do is detective work," he says. "You're reconstructing someone's entire career, sometimes going back decades, to trace an exposure to a specific product or job site. Getting that right is what makes or breaks a case."
Joseph earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Consumer Economics, with a concentration in Public Policy and Law, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
He then attended Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he completed a certificate in intellectual property law and served as an editor for the Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property. During law school, he also worked as a judicial extern for the Honorable Brigid Mary McGrath.
Before joining Sokolove Law, Joseph spent several years at other Chicago-area firms building toxic tort and product liability cases, representing clients with mesothelioma in states including Illinois, New York, and Missouri.
Joseph is admitted to practice in Illinois (2019) and New York (2022), as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. His work has earned him a spot on the National Trial Lawyers' Top 40 Under 40 list and a Super Lawyers Rising Stars selection.
He also volunteers with Triage Cancer's Legal Advisory Council, helping provide free resources to those navigating the practical and legal fallout of a cancer diagnosis.
