Talcum Powder Lawsuits Explained
At Sokolove Law, for more than 30 years, I’ve dedicated my career to helping people who have been harmed by the wrongdoing of major corporations, particularly in asbestos-related cases. Today, we want to talk about products you may not realize contain asbestos.
These products include personal hygiene items, commonly known as talcum powders, including baby powder. There is a clear connection between asbestos and talc, especially talc used in talcum powder products. Both talc and asbestos are naturally occurring minerals. Where talc deposits are found, asbestos is often present as well. When talc is mined from the earth, asbestos can be extracted along with it and end up in the final product. It’s not that companies want asbestos in their talc, but many failed to take adequate steps to remove it.
Unfortunately, talcum powder can cause cancer. Many talcum powder products have been contaminated with asbestos, which has been recognized as a carcinogen for decades. Microscopic asbestos fibers can be inhaled through the nose or mouth or ingested by swallowing. Once inside the body, these fibers can lodge in organs and tissues. Because they are so small, asbestos fibers can travel throughout the body.
For years, we’ve seen individuals develop mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure in industrial settings. Mesothelioma can form around the lungs from inhalation, but it can also develop in the abdomen, around the stomach, near the testicles, and even around the brain. This demonstrates how asbestos fibers can move throughout the body, regardless of whether they are inhaled or ingested.
Studies have also shown an increased risk of ovarian cancer associated with exposure to talcum powder. In many cases, this involves the use of talcum powder in the genital area. Talcum powder has commonly been used as a feminine hygiene product, as well as in cosmetics and makeup applications. Whether ovarian cancer is caused by asbestos contamination or by talc itself remains under scientific review. However, for years, we have successfully argued that talcum powder alone may contribute to the development of ovarian cancer.
Most commercially available talcum powder products have been contaminated with asbestos. These products include baby powder, after-shower powders, foot powders, and loose cosmetic powders applied to the face and body. Talcum powder has also been widely used in barbershops after haircuts or shaves. Barbers often apply the powder with a brush, sometimes blowing into it, which exposes both the barber and the client to airborne asbestos fibers.
Anyone who used talcum powder may be at risk for developing an asbestos-related disease. Long-term use increases that risk. This includes individuals who were exposed as infants when their parents applied talcum powder to them, exposing both the child and the parent. Many clients we represent were exposed not only in infancy but continued using talcum powder throughout their lives.
A talcum powder lawsuit may be filed by anyone diagnosed with a disease associated with talcum powder use who has a history of using these products. This includes mothers, nurses, barbers, and others who used talcum powder frequently. If someone has passed away due to an asbestos-related disease, their family may be able to file a claim on behalf of their loved one’s estate.
It’s important to understand that there are time limits for filing a claim, and those deadlines vary by state. The only way to know your rights is to speak with an experienced talcum powder lawyer.
People often ask how these cases are proven. Exposure to asbestos-containing talc is proven in much the same way as industrial asbestos exposure. If exposure can be established, the case can move forward. Evidence may include product containers, packaging, purchase history, or testimony from the injured person or their family members. Oral history and testimony are often the most effective ways to establish exposure.
Many companies have been named in talcum powder lawsuits, including Johnson & Johnson, Colgate-Palmolive, Avon, and others. Even well-known cosmetic brands have faced lawsuits. If you used an asbestos-contaminated talc product, the specific manufacturer does not prevent you from bringing a claim.
While lawyers cannot cure disease or reverse a diagnosis, what we can do at Sokolove Law is fight for justice. We work to secure financial compensation, provide peace of mind, and hold companies accountable for the harm they caused.
A talcum powder lawsuit is an individual case filed on behalf of one person against the manufacturers and suppliers responsible. It is not a class action. Each case stands on its own, based on the individual’s exposure and injuries.
Verdicts in talcum powder cases vary depending on the facts. Some juries have awarded significant verdicts to punish companies for concealing the dangers of their products. In states where punitive damages are allowed, verdicts may be substantial. In other states, compensation is limited to damages for pain, suffering, and loss, which can still be significant.
People often ask whether Johnson & Johnson knew their talcum powder products contained asbestos. While the company has publicly denied it, internal documents, scientific studies, and corporate records have shown that asbestos contamination was known. In many cases, juries have found that placing a dangerous product into the marketplace is enough to establish liability. Products must be safe for their intended use, and these products were not.

Asbestos Exposure & Mesothelioma
If you've been diagnosed with mesothelioma, the odds are fairly good it's not your fault. It wasn't from your tobacco smoking habit if you had one, and it wasn't from any other vice you can think of.
It was probably because you were exposed to asbestos in your job. That's likely how, you know, the vast majority of our clients are exposed.
Because it's not your fault and it should never have happened to you, you have a right to make a claim against the folks who knew it was gonna happen to you and did nothing about it. The average worker did not know that it was dangerous.
But the reason why we're able to bring claims against the manufacturers who used asbestos in their products is because they knew it was dangerous.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, Sokolove Law is here to help. Call us today.
Real Stories from Mesothelioma Clients
I went into urgent care and I was having kind of a hard time breathing, and I thought maybe it was allergies, and when I went to urgent care, they said that the left lung was collapsed.
I never thought I would be affected by something like mesothelioma.
To think that these manufacturers could continue — knowing that there was asbestos that could hurt people — continue to make these products for how many years. Years and years.
I said well, heck with this noise. They're gonna hear from me.

A Military Veteran's Mesothelioma Journey
My name is Steve, and my father was diagnosed with mesothelioma. He was incredibly proud of being in the military. He was drafted and sent to Germany, where he worked as a cook during the Vietnam War. Being a veteran was his whole life, and it was the proudest thing he shared with people. He would always salute random strangers who were wearing veterans’ hats. When my brother signed up for the military, watching my dad feel that same pride all over again—seeing his son follow the same path he did—was really special. He was a pretty special person.
After he came home from the military, he got a job with the county. He was hired as a mechanic’s helper and worked in a garage where they would blow out brake pads and dust. The brake pads he was changing all contained asbestos. We also had a summer house in Pennsylvania, and one summer he went there to chop wood and take care of things around the house. Suddenly, he couldn’t breathe. It felt like there was a heavy weight on his chest, and he just couldn’t catch his breath.
He ended up going to the hospital, where doctors discovered he had a pleural effusion. There were five liters of fluid in his chest. After surgery, the doctor came in and told us, “You have mesothelioma.”
At first, getting my dad to treatment was fairly easy because he was still somewhat healthy. About a year and a half in, it became much harder. Physically, he just wasn’t able to handle it anymore. Every three weeks he had treatment, and every other week he had an MRI or CAT scan. It was a constant cycle—treatment, CAT scan, MRI—over and over again. It was draining. It was draining for him, and it was draining for me. It was just a lot to handle.
I’m really upset because I had been looking forward to making him a grandfather. I dreamed of bringing a baby home to him one day, and now I can’t.
There was no reason for him to die. Asbestos is the cause of this entire thing. We decided to pursue a lawsuit because it wasn’t my dad’s fault, and it wasn’t fair what happened to him. He deserved compensation for what he went through.
Hiring Sokolove Law was one of the best decisions we made. The woman I spoke with on the phone made me feel comfortable right away. She made me feel safe, and she was incredibly compassionate and empathetic about our situation. It just felt like the right fit.
The law firm did so much for us. They helped us navigate the entire situation and were always calling to check on how we were doing. They checked on my dad’s treatment and wanted to know how things were going. I developed a real relationship with them. They would call to see how my dad was doing even when they didn’t have to, and that meant a lot.
Even months after my father passed, they still called to check in. They felt like family. We felt like part of their team—that they were truly there to take care of us. It was never about what they were going to get out of it. They genuinely wanted us to feel supported, safe, and cared for while dealing with the diagnosis my dad was given.
A U.S. Army Veteran’s Fight Against Mesothelioma
My favorite memory is standing at her door and seeing her walk in from the other room. The first time we ever met, a month after that we started dating, and a month after that we got married. I love you. Love you.
My name’s Alan Bonnan. My name is Constant Bonnan. I never thought I would be affected by something like mesothelioma. As an infant, my dad worked on a hydroelectric dam. As I got older, I would help him with brake jobs. Back then, asbestos was the thing for brakes.
The entire household changed once he was diagnosed with mesothelioma. When you’re looking at the man who has been your rock your entire marriage and to see him laid open like that… Yeah, mesothelioma changed our lives drastically.
He was let go from his work. He couldn’t work like that anymore. We should be getting ready for grandkids. We should be planning for our little vacations. We should be doing so many things.
About a month after he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, we contacted Sokolove Law to get them to help us. One of the reasons we need the lawyers is because we don’t speak lawyer. We don’t know the intricate twists and turns that the lawyers understand with our laws. This was new to us. It was amazingly efficient. We would have been lost without the firm coming to our help and being able to say, "We know what to do for you. We know how to file. We know every step you need to take, and we will be there for you." They made that promise to us and they kept it the entire way.
A lot of states have statutes of limitations on filing. Once you find out, he only had a year to be able to file. Otherwise, there are no repercussions for the companies that have done this. They took care of everything because they knew what needed to be done. It’s very important for people to reach out because you do not realize how much it is going to affect you in your day-to-day life. We suddenly had no income coming in. We were worried about what we were going to do for insurance for him because when the job ends, there goes the insurance.
You have to be able to consider every financial expense that you’re having right now, but you also have to think about this is not something that right now is going to be going away and the bills are going to keep coming. What are you going to do 10 years from now, or what is your family going to do when you’re gone? His number one priority since he found out is making sure that I’m taken care of and that our sons are taken care of. He’s a man of strength, honor, stubbornness, and mischievousness, but it’s taking everything and reducing you, and there’s nothing we can do except try to hold those dam waters back.
Just keep fighting, and that’s how we have to look at it. I really don’t care that they say no cure or that they say it’s terminal. I am not going to let it kill me. We filed a mesothelioma lawsuit because we knew it was more than we could handle on our own. These companies need to be held accountable. Hiring Sokolove Law was one of the best decisions we ever made. I would suggest that families use Sokolove Law because they’re an extremely knowledgeable firm. They made sure to match us with somebody who would work well with us. We never felt alone.
John and Dee Testimonial
Dee: "The day started out fine. John, we got up, and John, which is unusual for him, just came out of the bedroom and just sat down. And he said I just don't feel good, and I knew something was wrong because John doesn't complain. I said well I think we should probably go to the ER. They found out that there was over 2 liters of fluid on his left lung, and they were amazed that he was even able to breathe period. They did a CAT scan, and that's when he just said you have stage four mesothelioma, John.
John: "I was kind of blank I didn't know what to think. I didn't realize that my job had exposed me to this."
Dee: "We're the Stahls — I'm Dee, and this is my husband John."
John: "My name is John Stahl. I was first exposed to asbestos poisoning through a construction business through sheetrock through gaskets and piping all through my career, and I worked 43 years in construction business. If you don't work, you don't get paid. The first treatment was with chemotherapy, and I went every two weeks. It didn't take long an hour or so, but it'd take me 7 to 10 days to recover. That was hard for me because I'm a pretty active person."
Dee: "Asbestos is poison and it's a prescription for death. Yeah, I don't know. It's not curable, right?"
John: "Well, when I first I didn't really really sink in longer and longer we thought I thought about it, it's going to end my life eventually, but I'm gonna live in as well as I can.
Dee: "It made me mad and sad and to think that these manufacturers could continue knowing that there was asbestos that could hurt people continued to make these products for how many years years and years — and look what it's done to the love of my life. It's heartbreaking. After we got over the shock of the diagnosis and and slept on it that night, the next morning, I said to John, I'm going to call Sokolove Law, the company that I saw on the TV. I contacted them, and they were very compassionate, kind, caring. It was just a great experience."
John: "My kids are going to be taken care of. They're going to be taken care of, so it's a peace of mind knowing that I don't have to worry about them going down the road."
Dee: "I want people out there to realize that there is help, and they can get assistance and get a settlement from these manufacturers that continue to use this and know that it was dangerous for people."
John: "We filed a mesothelioma lawsuit to hold companies accountable. It's important to people who understand that there's help, and there's people there willing to help them go through this process of making these companies liable for what they've caused."
Meet David, a Farmer with Mesothelioma
I started working on stuff when I was seven years old. I worked on Pontiac Tempest and did a head gasket when I was seven. I worked on big trucks and farm tractors and automobiles.
My name is David Rosedale and I got a mesothelioma working on equipment, which would've been brakes, clutches, and gaskets. I started at a young age and been doing it my whole life.
I went into urgent care and I was having kind of a hard time breathing and I thought maybe it was allergies, and when I went to urgent care, they said that the left lung was collapsed, so they rushed me over to the hospital.
I was put in the hospital. They drained two liters out of the left lung. There was a biopsy done when they did that, and then it came back positive for mesothelioma. The doctor that told me that I had mesothelioma. She said, you need to get a lawyer.
And I just happened to look on my phone and I had seen the ad on tv, so I called it when I was in the doctor's office, Sokolove Law sent people out within a day to take my statements and see what was going on, and they got right on it and they handled the case professionally.
To file a lawsuit is worth it because it's a life altering experience and without the compensation, I mean you're pretty well lost. I decided to pursue the mesothelioma lawsuit because I needed to provide for my family and I was not going to be able to work.
Hiring Sokolove Law was a good choice because we were able to get the outcome that we needed.
When I was going through treatment with the legal process, they worked around my treatments and were conscious of my health concerns, so it was not a problem. I would recommend, if you're a victim of this, to pursue litigation — because the big companies knew this was a problem a long ways back, and it was a monetary concern on their part to keep using the product.
The product is still coming in from overseas. It has not stopped, and the damage that it causes is irreversible and you only have one life, so you want to do the best you can for your family.
An Immigrant’s Fight Against Mesothelioma
No me llevaba traductor.
Humano. Y eso es muy importante.
Empezó a sentirse cansado. Ya no tenía la misma energía. Empezó a adelgazar.
Supporting a Loved One Through Mesothelioma
So, fuimos juntos a comprar un anillo.
File a Camp Lejeune Claim Before Time Runs Out
There's been a lot in the news lately about Camp Lejeune and the Marines injured there from the contaminated drinking water.
Some people may not understand that those claims can still be made, meaning the law that established these claims provides a time limit for people to make those claims, and that time limit hasn't come up yet. So make your claim now before that window closes.
Others ask, what happens to my VA benefits if I make the claim? No one wants your VA benefits impacted. The VA has made it very clear on their own site, va.gov.
If you go there, it will state clearly for you that making a claim for injuries from the drinking water at Camp Lejeune against the United States government will have no impact on VA benefits. That's worth repeating.
There is no impact on VA benefits for making these claims.
While this window to make claims remains open, Sokolove Law continues to accept more clients for Camp Lejeune cases, and we will continue to do so while the window remains open.
If you or a loved one has been injured by the drinking water from Camp Lejeune, call Sokolove Law now.

Sokolove Law - Car Accident Testimonial
My name is Matt, and I contacted Sokolove Law after getting in a car accident. I'm a big fisherman, I love to hunt, and I'm always exploring stuff in this area. I go to this beach parking lot regularly to check to see if there are any fish biting. It's a drive I take multiple times a day. It's right down the street. I was just driving along, I was minding my own business, driving the speed limit, and all of a sudden someone was just driving into the side of my car and crashing into it. My car was completely totaled. I ended up on somebody's front yard.
Probably a day or two later, I started having some really, really bad back cramps, which is something that I've never in my life experienced. They were really really bad — I actually fell over because my whole back just seized up. It was just a pain I had never felt before. I probably had to go to physical therapy for somewhere between eight and nine weeks. Once I started having to go to physical therapy and once I started to get medical treatment for this, it felt like that shouldn't be something I have to pay for. It wasn’t my fault. It was someone else’s fault. Somebody was irresponsible and crashed into me. That’s when I started thinking about Sokolove Law.
I reached out to the law firm one week after the accident. The reason I did that was I was interested to see how much money would be available for a crash like this. I've never done anything accident-lawsuit-related in my life until now, and I was very surprised at how easy things were. Honestly, it was just so professionally done. That’s how I would describe it. My experience working with the legal team at Sokolove Law was excellent. It was super simple. They were super professional. Everything was laid out very clearly, and there was no confusion about what needed to be done at all. They did a lot of work to get that settlement done, and I’m really happy that I was able to find them, contact them, and get things done.
When the case was settled, I felt very relieved. I felt very happy, actually, because things were done, the check was there, and I didn’t have to deal with any of this anymore. I wish that my car didn’t get totaled, but I ended up getting a new car out of it, and, you know, everything’s going well now. I would recommend other people contact a firm like Sokolove Law after a car accident because injuries from car accidents aren’t always immediately apparent. It could be something that flares up later, like in my case. My back hurt more and more over the following days after the accident. I just feel like not enough people know what their options are when they get into a crash. You don’t have to just call the insurance company. You can talk to an attorney. It doesn’t cost you any money to speak to an attorney at all. It’s completely free to speak to them. I don’t see why you wouldn’t do it if you’re injured in a car accident. It’s a very simple process, and you can get money out of it.
Alexandra's Car Accident Testimonial
My name is Alexandra. I am a teacher in the Boston area, and I was in a car accident in 2021. I was on my way to work. I took an exit and was at a ramp at a complete stop when I got rear-ended. I pulled over, followed the typical accident protocol, and when I was greeted by the other driver, he didn't speak English very well. The only thing he had on him was an insurance card, no license.
Initially, I didn't contact the police because the accident didn't seem that bad. But when I realized he didn't have a license and couldn't provide me with any information verbally, I did contact the police. They were able to give me his license number and confirm that the insurance card he gave me was valid.
I would say probably within an hour, after the initial shock wore off, I started feeling some pain in my ribs and back. I went to the ER, and they just told me to take some ibuprofen. After a couple of days, the pain was still there, so I decided to contact my primary care doctor. Based on her assessment, she felt I had torn ligaments in my ribs and referred me to physical therapy. I had to go to physical therapy three times a week for about eight weeks.
At the time, I was paid hourly. Every time I had to go to physical therapy or a doctor's appointment for a follow-up, I wasn't getting paid for that time. So, not only was I in pain, but I was also losing income. Because I'm a teacher, my days are very hectic. I work typically from 7:30 to 3:30, and working with five- and six-year-old kids, I'm constantly on my feet—up and down. It did impact my workday because there were times when I needed to be standing in front of the class to teach a lesson, and I couldn't stand because of the pain.
I decided to file a lawsuit after the accident because I had always seen commercials and advertisements on TV and radio about personal injury attorneys saying, "If you're in a car accident, call us." I thought, why not? I reached out to Sokolove Law. I decided to file a lawsuit because of the amount of time I had spent at doctors' offices and the frequent, long physical therapy sessions.
When I hired a local attorney, I felt they would best understand not only my situation but also the location of the accident and help me navigate the process, from my initial intake, being in the hospital and ER, doctor's appointments, to physical therapy. They knew everything in the area, which gave me a sense of comfort.
My experience working with Sokolove Law and my attorney was amazing. It was really quick. When I first talked to the attorney, the thing that stood out to me was that his first few questions were about how I was feeling and doing. He genuinely cared about my recovery more than anything and was trying to help me make up the income I wasn't receiving.
My legal team constantly reached out to make sure I was okay and doing better, with no strings attached. That made me feel comforted and like they genuinely cared about me. I'm happy I trusted my instinct and called because it ultimately worked out for me.
I would definitely say that if anyone is thinking about pursuing a car accident claim, at least call and see where it goes. If you've been injured, contact Sokolove Law today.
