Breaking News: Boppy Newborn Loungers Recalled Due to Infant Deaths

At least eight infant deaths have been connected to the Boppy Newborn Lounger between December 2015 and June 2020. As of September 2021, all models and colors of the Newborn Lounger product have been recalled.

The Dangers of Boppy Pillows

The Boppy Newborn Lounger puts infants at risk of suffocation. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), children can suffocate if they move, roll over, or are placed in the lounger in a position that causes difficulty breathing, or if the child rolls onto another surface. Many infants begin to roll over between 3 and 4 months of age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CPSC recommends that all babies should sleep on their back on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or playpen. The commission advises against the use of pillows, blankets, padded crib bumpers, and other hazardous items that may cause suffocation.

If your infant was injured or killed by a Boppy Newborn Lounger — or another unsafe baby pillow product like infant head shaping pillows — you may be eligible for financial compensation.

Boppy Newborn Lounger Recalls

On Sept. 23, 2021, the CPSC and The Boppy Company issued a voluntary recall on 3.3 million baby loungers.

The three products named in the Boppy Lounger recall were:

  • Boppy Original Newborn Lounger
  • Boppy Preferred Newborn Lounger
  • Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Lounger

These three products were sold at several retailers including Target, Walmart, Pottery Barn Kids, and Amazon.com from January 2004 to September 2021.

The CPSC recalled these three nursing pillows since they are not infant sleep products and can result in infant injury and death when children are left in an unsupervised environment.

“Loungers and pillow-like products are not safe for infant sleep, due to the risk of suffocation. Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time — even in products not intended for sleep — and since suffocation can happen so quickly, these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market.”

– Robert S. Adler, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman
