• September 3, 2026: Spokane-area homeowners who lost properties in recent fires faced delays rebuilding as debris had to be inspected and cleared for asbestos and other hazardous materials.
• February 17, 2026: A Puget Sound asbestos removal contractor was fined more than $200,000 after Washington state officials said the company knowingly exposed workers to extremely hazardous conditions and misled inspectors by indicating the site was safe.
• May 29, 2025: The Washington Supreme Court ruled that a former Alcoa worker with mesothelioma could pursue his asbestos lawsuit against the company's successor under an exception to Washington's workers' compensation law. Alcoa allegedly knew asbestos was certain to cause injury but failed to protect workers.
• March 19, 2025: A Pierce County Superior Court judge awarded more than $16 Million to the family of a Washington man who died from asbestos-related lung cancer in 2022. The court entered a default judgment against Canadian asbestos supplier Asbestos Corp. Ltd.
• February 13, 2025: Washington's Department of Labor & Industries fined U-Haul of Spokane $231,000 for knowingly exposing mechanics to asbestos from damaged vinyl floor tiles at a former K-Mart facility. Testing found that nearly 90,000 square feet of flooring and adhesive contained asbestos.
• January 14, 2025: Two Vancouver business owners faced a combined $116,000 in fines for allegedly violating asbestos safety rules while renovating a 1977 home. Officials said neither was certified to perform asbestos abatement, and one owner allegedly falsified lab results in an attempt to dispose of construction debris.
• September 30, 2024: Nearly 150 firefighters may have been exposed to asbestos during training exercises in Snohomish, Washington. The potential exposure occurred while firefighters trained in a building that contained asbestos.
• May 28, 2024: Washington's Department of Labor & Industries issued a $790,000 fine against Seattle Asbestos of Washington, alleging the Lynnwood asbestos removal company knowingly exposed workers and customers to asbestos.
• March 15, 2023: A Washington appeals court upheld a mesothelioma verdict for the family of a Camas paper mill worker who developed the cancer after decades of workplace exposure. The court found there was sufficient evidence linking his exposure to asbestos-containing dryer felts supplied by Scapa Waycross.
• November 18, 2021: Whatcom County health officials warned residents about naturally occurring asbestos that could be carried by floodwaters from Swift Creek and the Sumas River.
• March 19, 2020: Washington expanded restrictions on asbestos-containing building materials to cover nonresidential buildings under a new law aimed at reducing the risk of asbestos exposure during construction, renovation, and demolition work.

$20.9 Million Washington Mesothelioma Verdict

In May 2026, a King County jury awarded $20.9 Million to a Washington abatement worker who was diagnosed with mesothelioma at age 55 after asbestos exposure at industrial work sites across the Pacific Northwest.

Evidence indicated that his exposure did not occur while actively removing asbestos with protective equipment, but from deteriorated and damaged asbestos-containing materials elsewhere at the industrial facility.

Following a 3-week trial, the jury found Simpson Tacoma Kraft Company liable for failing to maintain safe premises and protect workers.

$13.5 Million Washington Mesothelioma Verdict

In October 2025, a King County jury awarded $13.5 Million to the family and estate of a former Longview Fibre worker who died from mesothelioma after alleged workplace asbestos exposure from the 1960s through 1980.

According to the mesothelioma lawsuit, the electrician's work at four Longview mills placed him near paper-making equipment where raw asbestos was used during the manufacturing process.

Twenty asbestos-related companies were sued, but most were dismissed. The jury ultimately found Union Carbide, which supplied raw asbestos, and Elementis Chemicals, whose predecessors delivered asbestos to Longview Fibre, negligent.

$16 Million Washington Asbestos Lung Cancer Award

In March 2025, a Pierce County Superior Court judge awarded more than $16 Million to the family of a Washington man who died from asbestos-related lung cancer at age 67.

The wrongful death claim was brought against Asbestos Corp. Ltd., a Canadian company that supplied asbestos to the United States for decades.

The award included more than $1.7 Million in economic damages and $5 Million for the victim's pain, suffering, and fear. His wife received $7.5 Million for loss of services, while each of their two daughters was awarded $1 Million.

$81.5 Million Washington Mesothelioma Lawsuit Verdict

In 2021, the Washington Supreme Court reinstated an $81.5 Million jury verdict for the family and estate of a mechanic who died from mesothelioma at age 67 after working with asbestos-containing automotive parts.

The mechanic regularly purchased and handled brakes, clutches, and other parts distributed by Genuine Parts Company and sold through NAPA stores, according to the asbestos lawsuit.

After an appeals court ordered a new trial on damages, the Washington Supreme Court reversed. The state's highest court found that the $81.5 Million award was supported by evidence and wasn't excessive.

$18 Million Washington Asbestos Verdict

In a Washington asbestos case, a jury awarded $18 Million after finding that secondhand exposure to asbestos-containing brake dust contributed to a woman's mesothelioma.

The jury found Hennessy Industries, the manufacturer of a brake-grinding machine, partly responsible. The company was accused of failing to warn that use of the machine with asbestos-containing brakes could release hazardous fibers.

The jury awarded $18 Million in total damages, assigning $2.7 Million of the liability to Hennessy and the remainder to other companies associated with the asbestos-containing brake products.
