What Is the Plibrico Asbestos Trust?

From 1930 to 1982, Plibrico asbestos-containing refractory materials were used in furnaces, boilers, and other high-temperature equipment across workplaces nationwide. Many workers who handled these products were later diagnosed with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases.

After being hit with approximately 100,000 asbestos lawsuits, Plibrico sought bankruptcy protection and established the Plibrico Asbestos Trust to compensate current and future victims. Today, eligible individuals and their families may be able to pursue payouts.

About the Plibrico Asbestos Trust

  • The Plibrico Asbestos Trust was established in 2008 following the reorganization of Plibrico Company and Plibrico Sales and Service Inc. to resolve asbestos personal injury claims linked to products manufactured, installed, maintained, removed, or distributed by the two businesses.
  • Plibrico manufactured asbestos-containing refractory materials, including cements, insulation block, and coatings for boilers and furnaces.
  • Those who worked with high-heat equipment were most likely to have come in contact with Plibrico's asbestos-containing refractory products. This includes boilermakers, pipefitters, steamfitters, and welders.
  • The Plibrico Asbestos Trust was initially funded with $206 Million, and money is still available today for victims diagnosed with mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other asbestos-related illnesses, as well as their family members.

Many workers qualify for compensation from multiple asbestos trust funds and lawsuits. Depending on the diagnosis, work history, and exposure evidence, total recoveries often exceed $1 Million on average.

For more than 45 years, Sokolove Law has helped families pursue asbestos compensation. Many clients begin receiving payments in as few as 90 days, and we work to identify every available source of financial recovery.

Plibrico Asbestos Products

Founded in Chicago in 1914, Plibrico Company started out as the Pliable Brick Company Inc., a manufacturer of a jointless refractory — a moldable, plastic material that could be installed as a single structure rather than assembled from separate bricks.

Plibrico's asbestos-containing products were used to insulate and repair boilers and furnaces in steel mills, power plants, and foundries. Workers who installed, maintained, or repaired this equipment often suffered repeated asbestos exposure while performing their jobs.

Plibrico asbestos products included:

  • Castables
  • Cements
  • Coatings
  • Insulating firebricks

Because asbestos was highly heat-resistant, it was commonly added to refractory products for high-temperature applications. When Plibrico's asbestos products were installed, repaired, or otherwise manipulated, tiny asbestos fibers could be inhaled or swallowed by workers.

Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases often take 20 to 50 years to develop after exposure. Asbestos claims allow victims to seek compensation through the Plibrico Asbestos Trust and other sources.

History of Plibrico Company Asbestos Lawsuits

Over the years, Plibrico was named in about 100,000 asbestos lawsuits alleging that workers and their family members developed serious illnesses after being exposed to the company's refractory products.

Many of these claims involved workers employed at steel mills, power plants, refineries, foundries, and other industrial facilities where Plibrico refractory products were manufactured, installed, repaired, or removed.

Worksites that used Plibrico asbestos products include:

Over 1,300 worksites across 46 states were confirmed by the Plibrico Asbestos Trust as having used asbestos-containing products between 1930 and 1982.

The 1970s were peak exposure years, with 347 sites showing use of Plibrico asbestos products during that time period, followed by the 1960s with 251 sites, and the 1940s with 199 sites.

Indiana leads all states with 260 approved Plibrico asbestos exposure sites, followed by New York (164), Michigan (114), Illinois (101), and Ohio (97). Together, those 5 states account for over half of all listed sites.

Plibrico Asbestos Lawsuit Filed after Seaman's Death

A Plibrico wrongful death lawsuit filed in federal court in Louisiana alleges that a career merchant mariner developed fatal pulmonary disease after years of exposure to asbestos aboard commercial vessels.

In addition to Plibrico, the complaint named dozens of manufacturers and suppliers, including Pittsburgh Corning, Rockbestos Co., and Warren Pumps Inc.

According to the lawsuit, the man was repeatedly exposed to airborne asbestos fibers while working on ships where insulation, refractory materials, gaskets, pumps, valves, and other industrial equipment contained asbestos.

Jobs at Risk for Plibrico Company Asbestos Exposure

Plibrico's asbestos-containing refractory products were used in thousands of industrial settings, putting many workers at risk of harm.

In fact, 1,205 specific job titles are recognized by the Plibrico Asbestos Trust as carrying a presumption of "Significant Occupational Exposure," meaning a claimant who worked one of these jobs doesn't have to separately prove heavy asbestos exposure.

High-risk jobs included:

  • Asbestos workers
  • Boilermakers
  • Insulators
  • Oilers
  • Longshoremen
  • Millwrights
  • Pipefitters
  • Power plant workers
  • Shipyard workers
  • Steamfitters
  • Welders
  • U.S. military veterans

Shipyard work is the single largest category, with 211 recognized job titles, more than any other industry, followed by Steel/Iron (178), Chemical (146), Petrochemical/Refinery (141), and Powerhouse/Utility (135).

Family members may have also faced secondary exposure when workers carried home tiny asbestos fibers on their clothes or skin. Loved ones could inhale these fibers while handling contaminated laundry or through everyday contact in the home, increasing their risk of becoming sick years later.

How to File a Plibrico Asbestos Trust Claim

The Plibrico Asbestos Trust has a claims process for victims diagnosed with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases linked to the company's refractory products. An experienced asbestos attorney can walk you through the process.

When filing a Plibrico Asbestos Trust claim, we can help:

  1. Confirm your eligibility: We look at your work history, medical records, and personal information to determine whether you may be eligible for a payout from the Plibrico trust and use that evidence to link your exposure to the company's products.
  2. Prepare and submit your claim: Our attorneys complete the required paperwork and file it with the Plibrico trust, along with claims to any other asbestos trust funds you may qualify for.
  3. Determine the best review option: We'll explain the differences between Expedited Review and Individual Review and help you choose the option that best fits your circumstances.
  4. Receive compensation: If your claim is approved, the trust will assign a value to your claim and calculate your payment using its current payment percentage and established payment procedures.
  5. Maximize your recovery: Because many workers encountered asbestos from multiple manufacturers over the course of their careers, we can help identify every available trust fund claim and legal option that may increase your total compensation.

"The process was not difficult at all. The majority of the settlements came in within the first year or so."
– Kelly, Daughter of a Refinery Worker with Mesothelioma & Firm Client

Like other asbestos trust funds, the Plibrico Trust has filing deadlines that may limit how long you have to pursue compensation. These deadlines can vary depending on your circumstances, so it's important to speak with an asbestos attorney as soon as possible.
