Topamax Linked To Orofacial Birth Defects
Topamax side effects include birth defects. Studies have shown an increased risk of oral birth defects, including cleft lip and cleft palate, in children born to mothers who were prescribed Topamax. Our Topamax lawyers want to help parents help their children who have been injured because of Topamax exposure.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced a warning that women who are pregnant or of childbearing age should discuss, with their health care provider, options to Topamax for the treatment of their seizures. The FDA placed topiramate, the generic form of Topamax, in Pregnancy Category D. Pregnancy Category D means there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on human data but the potential benefits from use of the drug in pregnant women may be acceptable in certain situations, despite its risks.
Topamax and topiramate
Topamax (and Topiramate) is a prescription medication used to treat seizures in epileptic adults and children over the age of 10. It is also used to prevent migraines before they happen, but not to relieve migraine pain while such a headache occurs. Health care professionals will often prescribe the medication along with other medicines to treat people who continue to have seizures while taking other anti-seizure drugs
Topamax is made by Ortho-McNeil Neurologics, and is used in either tablet form in various dosages, or as a so-called 'sprinkle capsule' to be opened and sprinkled onto food. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement of brain cells.
