Founded in 1887 and taken over by Bethlehem Steel in 1916, Sparrows Point grew into the world's largest center for producing steel and shipbuilding. At its peak, the shipyard employed more than 8,600 workers — and many were regularly exposed to asbestos.

U.S. Navy ships were frequently built and repaired at Sparrows Point during World War II. At the time, asbestos was widely used in insulation, boilers, turbines, pumps, gaskets, and engine rooms aboard naval vessels because of its heat resistance and fireproofing properties.

When the steel mill was finally demolished after its 2012 closure, the Maryland Department of the Environment cited the owners and their contractor for handling asbestos improperly, confirming that this mineral remained present at the site more than a century after it opened.

In 2026, the Supreme Court of Maryland issued an important ruling in Robin B. Quinn, Personal Representative for Jo Ann Allen v. General Electric Company, which expanded legal protections for people who developed asbestos-related diseases — even if they never set foot on a job site.

The case involved Jo Ann Allen, who developed mesothelioma and lung cancer after years of washing her husband's work clothes, which were covered in asbestos dust from his job installing insulation at a Maryland power plant. This is known as secondhand exposure.

A Baltimore jury awarded over $9.6 Millionto 4 Maryland families whose loved ones passed away from asbestos-related lung cancer linked to occupational exposure.

The verdict was against Wallace & Gale Co., a Baltimore-based insulation contractor. McCormick Asbestos Co. was also named in the Maryland lung cancer lawsuit, but the company reached a settlement with the families before trial.

At least 2 of the men were exposed to asbestos-containing products while working at the American Smelting facility in Baltimore, while the other 2 men were exposed at Bethlehem Steel’s Sparrows Point steel mill.

$3.97 Million Asbestos Lung Cancer Verdict in Maryland

The families of 3 Bethlehem Steel plant workers who passed away from lung cancer were awarded a total of $3.97 Million by a Baltimore Circuit Court jury.

Maryland lung cancer attorneys representing the families argued that the men's illnesses were caused in part by the asbestos-containing brakes on overhead crane and mill motors at the Sparrows Point mill.

The jury found that General Electric, which manufactured the crane and motor brakes used at the facility, was responsible for the workers' deaths.
