What Is the Halliburton Asbestos Trust Fund?

Halliburton Company and their affiliates Dresser Industries, Harbison-Walker Refractories, and Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) manufactured, supplied, or used asbestos-containing products and materials in industrial operations for decades.

As workers became sick, Halliburton asbestos subsidiaries faced over 661,000 asbestos lawsuits. The resulting bankruptcy reorganization led to the Halliburton asbestos trust, formally known as the DII Industries, LLC Asbestos PI Trust.

About the Halliburton Asbestos Trust

  • Halliburton's asbestos liabilities stemmed largely from the operations of DII Industries (formerly Dresser Industries) and affiliated companies, including Harbison-Walker Refractories and Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR).
  • By 2004, the companies had reorganized through Chapter 11 bankruptcy, seeking to resolve pending claims involving more than 386,000 asbestos claimants.
  • DII Industries, LLC Asbestos PI Trust was officially established in January 2005.
  • As part of the reorganization, asbestos claims against Halliburton and their participating affiliates were permanently channeled to the trust for evaluation and payment.
  • Workers most commonly affected by Halliburton-related asbestos exposure include boilermakers, construction workers, foundry workers, furnace workers, oilfield workers, and steelworkers.
  • Individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other qualifying diseases may be eligible to seek compensation through the Halliburton asbestos trust.
  • Surviving spouses, family members, and estate representatives may also qualify to file claims on behalf of deceased loved ones.
  • The Halliburton Company asbestos trust had an initial valuation of $2.8 Billion and continues to review and pay claims filed by victims and their families.

More than $30 Billion is estimated across all asbestos trust funds. On average, mesothelioma victims secure more than $1 Million through asbestos claims. Compensation can cover medical expenses, lost wages, travel for treatment, and more.

For more than 45 years, Sokolove Law has helped families affected by asbestos exposure pursue compensation from corporations like Halliburton. In many cases, our clients begin receiving compensation in as few as 90 days.

Halliburton Asbestos Products

Founded in 1919, Haliburton Company provided products to the petroleum and energy industries. However, the company's asbestos liabilities trace back to Harbison-Walker Refractories Company, a Pennsylvania-based firebrick manufacturer.

Dresser Industries, a Dallas oil-field equipment maker, acquired Harbison-Walker in 1967. Halliburton then acquired Dresser Industries in 1998, inheriting decades of asbestos claims tied to Harbison-Walker's refractory products, as well as Dresser's pumps, compressors, and oilfield equipment supplied through KBR.

Because Halliburton and their subsidiaries operated across a wide range of industries, many workers were exposed to asbestos from multiple manufacturers and products.

Haliburton Asbestos-Containing Products

Halliburton asbestos exposure came from two main sources: heavy industrial equipment manufactured by their Dresser subsidiary and drilling mud additives supplied through KBR. The equipment relied on asbestos for heat resistance, while the drilling muds relied on the fibers for viscosity control.

Haliburton asbestos products include:

  • Alco locomotives
  • Baroid drilling mud
  • Clark compressor
  • Dresser pump
  • Galion cranes
  • Galion road construction equipment
  • IMCO drilling mud
  • Leroi compressor
  • Magcobar drilling mud
  • Moore turbine
  • Pacific pump
  • Roots compressor
  • Worthington compressor
  • Worthington pump
  • Worthington turbine
  • Worthington-Moore turbine

Workers who operated or maintained this equipment or who mixed and handled these drilling muds on rigs and at well sites may have been exposed to asbestos fibers, often without adequate protective equipment.

Harbison-Walker Co. Asbestos Products

Harbison-Walker was one of the largest refractory manufacturers in the country, producing fire brick, castables, and coatings designed to withstand extreme heat in steel mills, foundries, and chemical plants. Asbestos was a key ingredient in many of these formulations before the dangers were widely known.

Harbison-Walker asbestos products include:

  • Asbestos millboard
  • Chromepak G
  • Exkase fire brick lines
  • HW mineral fiber coating
  • Lightweight castable 10
  • Metalkase fire brick lines
  • Micacrete 7
  • Tabexkase Nucon fire brick lines

These refractory products lined furnaces, kilns, and boilers, so workers who installed, repaired, or removed them were often exposed to high concentrations of asbestos dust.

Because asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma can take 20 to 50 years to develop, many victims are only now being diagnosed after exposure that occurred decades ago.

Through asbestos claims, victims exposed to Halliburton, Dresser, Harbison-Walker, or KBR asbestos products may be able to seek compensation through the Halliburton asbestos trust.

A History of Halliburton Asbestos Lawsuits

The Halliburton asbestos trust was established through bankruptcy reorganization to compensate current and future victims of Harbison-Walker, Dresser Industries, and Kellogg Brown & Root.

Halliburton's subsidiaries had faced more than 661,000 asbestos claims since 1976. In December 2003, Halliburton's DII Industries and Kellogg Brown & Root subsidiaries filed for Chapter 11 to resolve claims from more than 386,000 asbestos claimants and 21,000 silica claimants.

The DII Halliburton asbestos trust was funded with roughly $2.8 Billion in cash and nearly 60 million shares of company stock, in an asbestos settlement ultimately valued at approximately $4.2 Billion.

Halliburton asbestos exposure occurred at thousands of work locations across the country. Sites are heavily concentrated in Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois, which is consistent with Dresser and Halliburton's oil-and-gas and Harbison-Walker's refractory customer base.

Employers that show up repeatedly include U.S. Steel, Bethlehem Steel, DuPont, Exxon, General Electric, General Motors, Gulf Oil, Armco Steel, and various power utilities.

Halliburton Subsidiary Hit with $150 Million Asbestos Verdict

A Mississippi jury awarded a $150 Million asbestos verdict to 6 former laborers who alleged they developed asbestos-related lung disease after years of working around asbestos-containing products in shipyards, boiler rooms, and schools from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Each man received a $25 Million award after claiming exposure to asbestos products manufactured or distributed by several companies, including Dresser Industries' Harbison-Walker division, a Halliburton subsidiary.

Although none of the victims had been diagnosed with mesothelioma or lung cancer at the time of trial, they argued that their asbestos lung disease placed them at an increased risk of developing those serious illnesses.

$30 Million Halliburton Asbestos Lawsuit Settlement

Halliburton agreed to pay $30 Million to settle claims brought by approximately 120 families in the Pacific Northwest who alleged they developed mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases after exposure to asbestos products distributed by Halliburton subsidiaries.

Many of the claims involved former workers and veterans from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, as well as employees at regional shipyards, pulp mills, and power plants.

“It was everywhere. He even remembered some of the guys using it for snowball fights.”
– Wife of a Halliburton Mesothelioma Victim

The settlement became part of Halliburton's larger $4 Billion nationwide agreement that resolved hundreds of thousands of asbestos claims and helped establish funding for future asbestos victims.

$30 Million Baltimore Asbestos Verdict Against Dresser Industries

A Baltimore, Maryland jury awarded $30 Million against Dresser Industries, a Halliburton subsidiary, after 5 workers alleged they developed asbestos-related diseases from exposure to Harbison-Walker refractory products.

Halliburton argued the evidence didn't support the jury's findings and that legal errors occurred during the trial. The case was one of several significant asbestos verdicts that increased pressure on Halliburton before the creation of the company's asbestos trust.

Halliburton Asbestos Settlement to Be Shared by 30 Victims

Halliburton announced that they had settled 30 asbestos lawsuits pending in New York, many involving victims diagnosed with mesothelioma and other life-threatening cancers.

While the company did not disclose the amount of the Halliburton asbestos settlement, they said the resolution was consistent with historical settlement values for similar claims.

At the time, Halliburton reported that they had resolved approximately 207,000 asbestos claims since 1976 through settlements or court proceedings for a total of $162 Million.

Who Was Affected by Halliburton Asbestos Exposure?

For decades, Halliburton and their related companies manufactured and distributed asbestos-containing products and materials in industrial facilities throughout the United States.

Workers involved in construction, energy production, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and heavy industry often faced the greatest risk of asbestos exposure.

High-risk occupations included:

  • Boilermakers
  • Construction workers
  • Electricians
  • Foundry workers
  • Furnace and refractory workers
  • Industrial maintenance workers
  • Insulators
  • Machinists
  • Oilfield workers
  • Pipefitters
  • Power plant workers
  • Refinery workers
  • Shipyard workers
  • Steel mill workers
  • Welders
  • U.S. military veterans

Many workers were exposed without ever handling Halliburton asbestos products directly. Asbestos fibers could become airborne during installation, maintenance, demolition, or repair work, exposing nearby tradespeople and contractors.

Family members also faced secondary asbestos exposure when workers unknowingly carried asbestos dust home on their clothing, shoes, tools, or hair. Inhaling these fibers has been linked to mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases decades after the initial exposure.
