Who Can Work with Our Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Law Firm?

In general, a Pennsylvania mesothelioma law firm may be able to help anyone who developed mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease after being exposed to asbestos, as well as their family members.

Your legal team must be able to connect your diagnosis to past asbestos exposure. This often involves reviewing employment records, identifying asbestos-containing products, interviewing witnesses, and uncovering decades-old exposure histories.

Our Pennsylvania asbestos law firm can help:

  • Patients with illnesses like mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis
  • Family members, such as the victim’s spouses and children
  • Estate representatives in the case of wrongful death

"Our primary role in the very beginning stages of a mesothelioma lawsuit is to be detectives. We have to find products that were around the victim during the time of their exposure to asbestos."
– Jim Sokolove, Founder (Retired 2013)

Asbestos victims may not remember the specific products or job sites tied to their exposure, but our Pennsylvania mesothelioma attorneys have the resources and experience to trace asbestos exposure and build strong claims.

Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Statute of Limitations

In Pennsylvania, laws called statutes of limitations place strict deadlines on filing a mesothelioma lawsuit for personal injury or wrongful death.

The mesothelioma statute of limitations in Pennsylvania generally gives victims 2 years after the date of a diagnosis or a loved one's passing to file a mesothelioma lawsuit (42 Pa. C.S. § 5524(8)).

Missing the filing deadline could prevent you from recovering compensation that you're entitled to. That's why it's important to speak with an attorney as soon as possible after a diagnosis or the loss of a loved one.

Call (800) 647-3434 now to find out if you may be eligible to file a Pennsylvania mesothelioma claim.

Filing a Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Lawsuit: What to Expect

Families pursuing a mesothelioma lawsuit typically go through a process that involves pinpointing where asbestos exposure occurred, collecting evidence, and seeking compensation from the companies responsible.

The majority of mesothelioma lawsuits end in a settlement, so most families never have to set foot in court to receive compensation.

Filing a Pennsylvania asbestos lawsuit generally involves:

  • Speaking with an experienced Pennsylvania mesothelioma lawyer
  • Investigating work history and asbestos exposure
  • Gathering medical records and other supporting evidence
  • Filing claims against the companies responsible for your exposure
  • Negotiating settlements and seeking compensation from asbestos trust funds
  • Taking your case to trial if a settlement is unable to be reached

Many of our clients start receiving mesothelioma payouts within 90 days, with additional checks arriving in the next 12-18 months or so. This helps families cover immediate expenses, while also saving for future needs as money comes in from other companies.

When you work with Sokolove Law, our mesothelioma attorneys can guide you through each step of the legal process, so you can focus on your treatments and daily routine.

Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Lawsuit Updates & News 2026

Pennsylvania has a long history of asbestos litigation due to the state's extensive manufacturing, mining, shipbuilding, and steel industries.

Recent Pennsylvania mesothelioma lawsuits have alleged that companies knew about the dangers of asbestos but failed to adequately warn workers.

Here are some of the latest PA asbestos and mesothelioma lawsuit updates:

  • February 17, 2026: An Ohio court ruled that multiple asbestos claims against Pennsylvania-based Hillman Company could be treated as separate occurrences for insurance coverage purposes, potentially unlocking millions in additional coverage for asbestos liabilities.
  • February 13, 2026: A Philadelphia jury awarded $250,000 to the family of a Pennsylvania woman who alleged that decades of using Johnson & Johnson's baby powder caused her ovarian cancer.
  • January 22, 2025: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued a landmark asbestos ruling in Estate of Herold v. University of Pittsburgh, expanding legal protections for families affected by take-home asbestos exposure.
  • January 13, 2025: A Pittsburgh jury ruled in favor of Johnson & Johnson in a talc trial, despite finding that the company was negligent and intentionally misrepresented the safety of their products.
  • October 14, 2024: The Pennsylvania Superior Court ruled that an insurer may be required to cover asbestos-related claims brought by the spouse of a former Pennsylvania utility worker who developed mesothelioma after decades of occupational asbestos exposure.
  • October 2, 2024: An Allegheny County jury awarded $3.8 Million to an Altoona boilermaker diagnosed with mesothelioma after finding Foster Wheeler fully liable for his asbestos exposure.
  • August 2024: The Pennsylvania Superior Court upheld a $2.3 Million mesothelioma verdict against Lenox Instrument Company after finding sufficient evidence that a former employee was exposed to asbestos-containing products at work.
  • April 2024: A court upheld a Pennsylvania mesothelioma verdict for the estate of a former hairdresser who developed the disease after years of using asbestos-contaminated talcum powder products in her salon.
  • July 2022: A Pennsylvania jury awarded $3.8 Million to the family of a longtime Washington Penn Plastics maintenance worker who developed mesothelioma from industrial talc tainted with asbestos fibers.
  • June 2019: Asbestos federal MDL 875 officially closed after 28 years. Based in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the consolidated multidistrict litigation served as the federal hub for asbestos personal injury claims, resolving nearly 187,000 cases over its lifetime.
  • April 2009: Mesothelioma lawyers in Philadelphia, PA secured $14 Million for 3 U.S. Navy veterans who developed mesothelioma after working at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

As residents continue to be diagnosed with mesothelioma, claims against asbestos-related companies remain an important source of compensation.

These cases have helped families recover financial support for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.

Philadelphia Jury Awards $250,000 in Pennsylvania Talc Case

In February 2026, a Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas jury awarded $250,000 to the family of a Pennsylvania woman who claimed that long-term use of Johnson & Johnson's talc-based baby powder contributed to her ovarian cancer.

The victim allegedly used J&J baby powder from 1969 until 2017 and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2015. After her death in 2019 at age 68, her children continued pursuing the Pennsylvania talc lawsuit on her behalf.

Asbestos attorneys in Philadelphia secured $50,000 for the family's actual losses and $200,000 in punitive damages to punish the company for their wrongdoing.

Court Recognizes Pennsylvania Asbestos Claims for Secondhand Exposure

In January 2025, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in Estate of Herold v. University of Pittsburgh that employers and premises owners may owe a duty of care to household members who are exposed to asbestos brought home on a worker's clothing.

The decision is considered one of the most significant Pennsylvania asbestos rulings in recent years because it strengthens the rights of spouses, children, and other family members affected by secondary asbestos exposure.

The case involved allegations that asbestos fibers were carried home by a University of Pittsburgh employee diagnosed with mesothelioma, exposing family members who never worked directly with asbestos-containing materials.

The court concluded that these claims could proceed under Pennsylvania law, recognizing that companies may be responsible not only for occupational asbestos exposure but also for harm to family members exposed outside the workplace.

Jury Tries to Award $22 Million in Pennsylvania Talc Trial

In January 2025, a jury in Allegheny County ruled in favor of Johnson & Johnson in a case involving talc-based products that allegedly caused a Pennsylvania woman's ovarian cancer.

While jurors concluded that Johnson & Johnson had been negligent and had misrepresented the safety of their talc products, they also found that the victim had not proven that the company's actions caused her cancer.

After reaching that decision, jurors mistakenly continued deliberating on punitive damages and tried to award $22 Million against the company. However, because they had already determined that J&J was not legally responsible for the diagnosis, the award could not stand.

$3.8 Million Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Verdict

In October 2024, Pittsburgh mesothelioma attorneys secured a $3.8 Million mesothelioma verdict for a couple after an Allegheny County jury found boiler manufacturer Foster Wheeler responsible for the husband's cancer.

The 76-year-old resident of Altoona worked as a boilermaker for decades and spent 10 weeks of his career employed by Foster Wheeler, where he was allegedly exposed to asbestos while working around industrial equipment.

He was later diagnosed with mesothelioma and underwent treatment at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. This included surgery to remove a portion of his lung.

$2.3 Million Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Verdict Upheld

In August 2024, the Pennsylvania Superior Court upheld a $2.3 Million mesothelioma verdict awarded to the family of a former draftsman and designer who developed mesothelioma after working for Lenox Instrument Company between 1974 and 1981.

The family's Pennsylvania mesothelioma attorneys alleged that the victim was exposed to asbestos dust while working with heat shield products manufactured at the Pennsylvania facility. Testimony indicated that cutting, drilling, and milling asbestos-containing materials generated dust that workers regularly inhaled.

The case originated in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas, one of the nation's busiest asbestos litigation courts.

$400,000 Talc Mesothelioma Verdict for Hairdresser Affirmed

In April 2024, the Pennsylvania Superior Court affirmed a $400,000 mesothelioma verdict, awarding talcum powder compensation to the estate of a former hairdresser who died from malignant pleural mesothelioma.

The woman reportedly owned and operated a salon in Pennsylvania and regularly used multiple talc-based products between approximately 1960 and 1985.

At trial, the estate presented evidence that several of the talcum powder products used by the hairdresser contained asbestos-contaminated talc sourced from the Val Chisone region of Italy.

$3.8 Million Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Verdict for Plastics Factory Worker

A Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas jury awarded $3.8 Million to the family of Daniel Rugg, a maintenance worker who developed mesothelioma after approximately 30 years at a plastics manufacturing facility operated by Washington Penn Plastics.

According to the Pennsylvania mesothelioma lawsuit, Rugg regularly handled 50-pound bags of industrial talc that were emptied into storage hoppers at the company's plant in Washington, PA.

Expert testimony showed that the talc contained asbestos fibers and that the company had access to testing results indicating asbestos contamination but failed to warn workers or require protective equipment.

$14 Million Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Lawsuit Verdict for 3 Shipyard Workers

A Philadelphia, PA mesothelioma law firm recovered $14 Million for 3 U.S. Navy veterans who developed mesothelioma after years of asbestos exposure while working in shipyards.

The jury found that the former U.S. Navy officers developed mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos-laden pumps, valves, gaskets, and packing they handled while working at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

Two of the men worked for the shipyard from the 1960s to the 1980s, while the third worked there from 1961 to 1964, per the Pennsylvania mesothelioma lawsuit.

Fighting for a Pennsylvania Auto Mechanic with Mesothelioma

Theodore, known as “Teddy,” served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He also worked as a mechanic assistant, heavy equipment operator, and highway maintenance supervisor in New York, overseeing brake and clutch replacements.

Despite being 76 years old, Teddy was an active man who was chopping wood and performing chores around his Pennsylvania property when he suddenly found he couldn't breathe and felt a heavy weight in his chest. This incident led to his eventual diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma.

After learning that Teddy's asbestos exposure was linked to his career, his son Steve reached out to our Pennsylvania mesothelioma law firm for help. We fought on the family's behalf and secured the compensation they deserved.

"The money that we had received from the lawsuits, it's potentially generational money. It gave me the ability to buy my house. My brother bought a house. It had set us up financially that we can further benefit our lives for the better,” expressed Steve. “And his name is stamped on that, my dad's name is stamped on that."

A Military Veteran's Mesothelioma Journey Video Thumbnail
Video Summary: Decades after serving in the Vietnam War, Teddy was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer that eventually took his life. His son Steve shares how the family handled the loss and how Sokolove Law was able to help.

My name is Steve, and my father was diagnosed with mesothelioma. He was incredibly proud of being in the military. He was drafted and sent to Germany, where he worked as a cook during the Vietnam War. Being a veteran was his whole life, and it was the proudest thing he shared with people. He would always salute random strangers who were wearing veterans’ hats. When my brother signed up for the military, watching my dad feel that same pride all over again—seeing his son follow the same path he did—was really special. He was a pretty special person.

After he came home from the military, he got a job with the county. He was hired as a mechanic’s helper and worked in a garage where they would blow out brake pads and dust. The brake pads he was changing all contained asbestos. We also had a summer house in Pennsylvania, and one summer he went there to chop wood and take care of things around the house. Suddenly, he couldn’t breathe. It felt like there was a heavy weight on his chest, and he just couldn’t catch his breath.

He ended up going to the hospital, where doctors discovered he had a pleural effusion. There were five liters of fluid in his chest. After surgery, the doctor came in and told us, “You have mesothelioma.”

At first, getting my dad to treatment was fairly easy because he was still somewhat healthy. About a year and a half in, it became much harder. Physically, he just wasn’t able to handle it anymore. Every three weeks he had treatment, and every other week he had an MRI or CAT scan. It was a constant cycle—treatment, CAT scan, MRI—over and over again. It was draining. It was draining for him, and it was draining for me. It was just a lot to handle.

I’m really upset because I had been looking forward to making him a grandfather. I dreamed of bringing a baby home to him one day, and now I can’t.

There was no reason for him to die. Asbestos is the cause of this entire thing. We decided to pursue a lawsuit because it wasn’t my dad’s fault, and it wasn’t fair what happened to him. He deserved compensation for what he went through.

Hiring Sokolove Law was one of the best decisions we made. The woman I spoke with on the phone made me feel comfortable right away. She made me feel safe, and she was incredibly compassionate and empathetic about our situation. It just felt like the right fit.

The law firm did so much for us. They helped us navigate the entire situation and were always calling to check on how we were doing. They checked on my dad’s treatment and wanted to know how things were going. I developed a real relationship with them. They would call to see how my dad was doing even when they didn’t have to, and that meant a lot.

Even months after my father passed, they still called to check in. They felt like family. We felt like part of their team—that they were truly there to take care of us. It was never about what they were going to get out of it. They genuinely wanted us to feel supported, safe, and cared for while dealing with the diagnosis my dad was given.

Asbestos in Philadelphia Schools

In June 2025, the School District of Philadelphia made national news after being charged by the U.S. Department of Justice under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, making it the first school district in the United States to face criminal charges for asbestos violations.

The charges covered failures at a minimum of 31 schools between 2018 and 2023, a period during which students, teachers, and staff reported to those buildings daily, unaware of the conditions around them.

The scope of the problem extends far beyond the 31 schools named in the criminal charges. Of the district's 339 school buildings, nearly 300 are known to contain asbestos — a legacy of the construction era in which most of Philadelphia's public schools were built.

The human cost of that institutional failure became concrete in the case of a Philadelphia public school teacher diagnosed with mesothelioma at age 51 after nearly 30 years in district classrooms.

The case, which the district settled for $850,000, was directly referenced in the prosecution agreement.

Asbestos in Ambler, PA

Ambler, Pennsylvania carries one of the most documented asbestos exposure histories in the country. Between 1930 and 1974, the Keasbey & Mattison Company dumped approximately 1.5 million cubic yards of asbestos-containing waste across 25 acres surrounding their manufacturing plant.

The piles were so large that locals called them the "White Mountains of Ambler." Wind carried fibers from those piles into surrounding neighborhoods for decades, exposing residents who never even worked near the plant.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health quantified the damage in a study covering 1992 through 2008, finding that Ambler's mesothelioma rate was 3.1 times higher than the rest of Pennsylvania.

Additionally, from 2005 to 2014, 55.6% of mesothelioma cases in Ambler's 19002 zip code were diagnosed in women — a stark reversal from the 80%+ male rate seen in prior decades, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency did not add the site to their Superfund National Priorities List until 2009, and a portion of the contaminated area was used as a public park and playground until the mid-1980s.

Is there still asbestos in Pennsylvania?

What are the asbestos laws in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania asbestos laws regulate the handling, removal, and disposal of asbestos. However, there is no legislation governing legacy asbestos, so the cancer-causing mineral may still be present in older buildings.

Find out about PA asbestos laws:

  • Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) – Asbestos Occupations Accreditation and Certification Act: Requires asbestos inspectors, contractors, supervisors, and workers to be properly trained and certified before performing asbestos-related work in Pennsylvania.
  • Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) – Asbestos Abatement Regulations: Regulates asbestos removal, handling, and disposal and requires notice before certain demolition and renovation projects involving asbestos-containing materials.
  • Philadelphia Department of Public Health – Air Management Services (AMS): Imposes additional asbestos notification, permitting, and inspection requirements for projects within Philadelphia.
  • Allegheny County Health Department – Air Pollution Control Regulations: Oversees asbestos removal and demolition activities in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities.
  • Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA): Requires Pennsylvania schools to inspect for asbestos, maintain management plans, and monitor asbestos-containing materials to protect students and staff.

Additionally, Pennsylvania asbestos regulations may also include those enacted by local boards of health to protect residents from asbestos-related hazards.

Who is at risk of mesothelioma in Pennsylvania?

Because of Pennsylvania's history of steel production, manufacturing, power generation, mining, railroads, and shipbuilding, workers in a wide range of industries have been exposed to asbestos.

Asbestos jobs in PA include:

  • Boilermakers (Bethlehem Steel, U.S. Steel)
  • Coal miners (Anthracite region, Northeastern PA)
  • Construction workers (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh)
  • Insulators (Pittsburgh industrial corridor)
  • Iron & steel workers (Aliquippa, Braddock, Clairton, and Duquesne)
  • Locomotive & railroad workers (Pennsylvania Railroad)
  • Power plant workers (PECO, Duquesne Light)
  • Shipbuilders (Hog Island, William Cramp & Sons, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard)
  • Teachers (Philadelphia School District)
  • Textile workers (Keasbey & Mattison)
  • Vermiculite processors (Marysville, PA processing facility)
  • U.S. military service members (Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Willow Grove)

Even those who never directly worked with asbestos can be diagnosed with mesothelioma. Often, this is due to secondary exposure to asbestos.
