Understanding Social Media Addiction Settlements in 2026

Social media settlements award compensation to families and users for mental health harm suffered through apps like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

Tech companies may have knowingly designed social media platforms to be addictive with algorithms and engagement tools that contributed to mental health harms, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, self-harm, and suicide among children and adolescents.

Social media settlements may provide compensation for:

  • Medical treatment and hospitalization
  • Therapy, counseling, and mental health care
  • Lost income or future earning potential
  • Pain, emotional suffering, and reduced quality of life
  • Funeral expenses and wrongful death damages in fatal cases

Over 2,527 social media claims have been filed in courts nationwide. Many families are looking for answers, accountability, and financial compensation for the emotional and psychological toll these platforms allegedly caused.

So far, social media harm and verdicts for states and individual victims have already awarded $381 Million for harm tied to the apps.

Social Media Settlements vs. Trial Verdicts

Social media addiction compensation may be awarded as an out-of-court settlement or a trial verdict, depending on how the case progresses:

  • Social Media Settlements: Families and social media companies agree to resolve claims for a specific amount without going to trial.
  • Trial Verdicts: If no settlement is reached, a judge or jury decides whether the app is legally responsible and how much compensation may be awarded.

A social media settlement is often the most common outcome of these lawsuits. They can provide victims with access to social media addiction compensation sooner, allowing them to turn the page and move forward in life.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in social media lawsuit settlements and verdicts have already been awarded. If you or a loved one has been harmed, we may be able to fight hard for everything you deserve.

Social Media Lawsuit Settlements and Verdicts

Social media lawsuits have exposed what families say were dangerous platform designs and internal company decisions that prioritized engagement over child safety.

Litigation is ongoing, but several major social media settlements and verdicts have already put enormous financial pressure on companies like Meta, YouTube, Google, and Alphabet Inc. to enact reforms to protect young users.

Social media addiction settlements and verdicts include:

  • $375 Million New Mexico social media verdict over harms to children
  • $6 Million California social media verdict involving claims against Meta and YouTube
  • $30 Million YouTube settlement for allegedly collecting kids' data while they watched videos
  • $400 Million proposed TikTok claim settlement over face and voice scans of minors

Families, school districts, and government agencies claim algorithm-driven feeds and prolonged engagement features contributed to rising rates of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders among teens.

As more lawsuits move through the courts, those impacted continue seeking social media settlements and accountability from tech companies accused of putting profits above the mental health of young and vulnerable users.

$375 Million New Mexico Social Media Lawsuit Verdict

In March 2026, a New Mexico jury ordered Meta to pay $375 Million after finding the company violated state consumer protection laws tied to harms affecting children on Facebook and Instagram. The jury awarded the maximum penalty of $5,000 per violation.

The lawsuit accused Meta of misleading the public about platform safety while failing to stop predators and harmful content from reaching children. Prosecutors argued the company prioritized engagement and profits over meaningful child safety protections.

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez requested an additional $3.7 Billion in May 2026. He urged the judge to declare Meta a "public nuisance" and order them to overhaul their apps in order to protect young users.

$6 Million California Social Media Verdict

Just one day after the New Mexico verdict, a California jury ordered Meta and YouTube to pay $6 Million total to a 20-year-old woman who claimed social media addiction contributed to serious mental health problems.

The Los Angeles social media harm verdict included $3 Million for her actual losses and another $3 Million in punitive damages. Jurors assigned 70% fault to Meta and 30% to YouTube.

Unlike the New Mexico case, which centered on consumer protection violations, the California lawsuit focused on allegations that addictive platform design features caused harm. The victim alleged that she began using social media at age 6 and developed body dysmorphia and thoughts of self-harm.

Snapchat & TikTok Social Media Lawsuit Settlements

Snap Inc. and TikTok both chose to settle before the California social media addiction trial began, avoiding what victims claimed could have exposed damaging internal information about how the platforms were designed to keep children engaged.

Snapchat reportedly settled about 1 week before trial, while TikTok reached an agreement shortly before jury selection. The terms of the social media addiction settlements were not publicly disclosed.

The lawsuit was brought by a 19-year-old woman who claimed she became addicted to social media platforms at a young age and later developed severe depression and suicidal thoughts.

$30 Million YouTube Settlement

In January 2026, a federal judge approved a $30 Million YouTube class action settlement after families accused the company of illegally collecting children’s personal data.

Google allegedly gathered sensitive information from children under 13, including IP addresses, device identifiers, and geolocation data, while they watched videos on the app. Parents argued the company used the data to better target advertising without their consent.

The social media settlement claims also alleged that YouTube channel owners manipulated children by using cartoons and other kid-friendly content to keep them engaged. Other lawsuits have argued that such content can lead to addiction and mental health issues.

$400 Million TikTok Settlement for Child Privacy Violations

A proposed $400 Million TikTok lawsuit settlement would resolve claims by the U.S. government that the app violated federal child privacy laws by collecting personal information from children under 13 without parental consent.

According to the lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, TikTok knowingly allowed millions of children to create regular accounts, interact with adults, and share videos and messages on the platform while collecting and keeping their personal data.

In some cases, predators have been known to use apps like TikTok to interact with children, leading to both online and in-person sexual exploitation or abuse.

At Sokolove Law, we understand the impact of social media addiction on the victim and their entire family. Our team can handle the entire social media settlement process, allowing you to focus on getting your child the help that they need.

Most social media lawsuit settlements involve a set of steps: checking your eligibility, documenting harm, collecting evidence, filing a lawsuit, and negotiating with the tech companies responsible.

Our social media lawyers may be able to help:

  • Provide a free case review to determine your eligibility for a social media addiction settlement
  • Investigate your case and document injuries like anxiety, depression, and self-harm, as well as any treatments received
  • Collect usage evidence, including app accounts, screen time logs, and screenshots of harmful content
  • File your lawsuit against all companies responsible for your child's injuries
  • Negotiate a social media lawsuit settlement that provides financial support as fast as possible

If a social media settlement is unable to be reached, our team will be ready to fight for compensation from a trial verdict.

However, it's important to get legal help as soon as possible due to state laws called statutes of limitations, which set a filing deadline. If you miss this cutoff, you may miss your chance for social media addiction compensation.

Factors Impacting Social Media Addiction Settlements

Social media lawsuit settlement amounts can range from $10,000 to over $1 Million in severe cases involving psychological harm, self-harm, suicide attempts, or child exploitation.

The potential value of a social media addiction claim often depends on several factors, including the severity of the injuries, the user’s age, the cost of mental health treatment, and the strength of the evidence linking platform use to the harm.

Severity of the Harm

Cases involving hospitalization, suicide attempts, eating disorders, sexual exploitation, or long-term psychiatric treatment may result in higher social media settlement amounts. Courts may also award punitive damages if evidence shows a company knowingly ignored risks to young users.

For example, a California jury awarded $6 Million to a young woman who claimed years of social media addiction as a child contributed to serious mental health challenges, including body dysmorphia and thoughts of self-harm.

Mental Health Effects

Social media lawsuits often involve allegations of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, body image issues, sleep disruption, and other psychological injuries.

Children and adolescents who spend over 3 hours per day on social media face double the risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Compensation may include both current treatment costs and the long-term impact these conditions can have on education, employment, and quality of life. Treatment costs can range from $100-200 per outpatient therapy session to over $250,000 total for eating disorder care, according to Project HEAL.

Age of the User

Claims involving children and teenagers may carry greater value because young users are considered especially vulnerable to addictive platform features and harmful recommendation algorithms.

Researchers analyzed approximately 4,300 children starting at age 8 and found that about 40% showed high and increasingly addictive screen use associated with anxiety, depression, and suicidal behaviors.

Many lawsuits accuse social media companies of designing products that specifically target minors while failing to implement meaningful safety protections.

Length and Intensity of Platform Use

The amount of time a child spent using apps — and the degree of compulsive or addictive behavior alleged — may also affect social media settlement amounts.

Families often claim children were exposed to harmful content for years through algorithm-driven feeds that repeatedly pushed dangerous or emotionally damaging material. U.S. teens spend an average of 4.8 hours a day using social media apps, according to the American Psychological Association.

Strength of the Evidence

Internal company documents, app usage records, medical records, therapy notes, and expert testimony may strengthen a social media harm lawsuit.

Parents can export screen time data or use app usage trackers to document how much time their child spent on a certain platform. Screenshots of in-app activity timers or notification histories can also be used to show how engagement features led to excessive screen time.

Company Conduct and Accountability

Social media addiction settlement amounts may increase if attorneys can show a tech media company ignored internal warnings, concealed research about harms to children, or publicly minimized safety concerns.

In Instagram's case, internal research obtained by the Wall Street Journal found that the platform knew they made body image issues worse for 1 in 3 teen girls.

The California social media verdict, for instance, included $3 Million in actual damages plus $3 Million in punitive damages after jurors found Meta and Google acted with malice, oppression, or fraud.
