Breaking News: AmazonBasics Electronics May Burst Into Flames
A recent CNN report linked AmazonBasics products like USB cables to a heightened risk of fires. The report cited over 1,500 user reviews where USB cables, microwaves, and other electronics started smoking, sparking, or shooting out flames. In response, customers have called for a recall on the products and some have filed AmazonBasics lawsuits.
AmazonBasics Linked to Fires & Explosions
CNN found that over 70 AmazonBasics products had customer reviews complaining about smoke, fires, or explosions.
AmazonBasics products linked to fires include:
- Microwaves
- Surge protectors
- Toasters
- USB cables
The report noted that at least 100 reviewers said they had been shocked and/or burned from AmazonBasics products. In some cases, these injuries can be very severe.
In 2017, a 20-year-old suffered second-degree burns and throat damage from breathing in smoke after his phone charger started a house fire. He had to be hospitalized and later received compensation through an AmazonBasics settlement for his injuries.
The CNN report also notes several close calls, including ones where children may have been put at risk of getting burned by exploding devices.
What Are AmazonBasics Products?
AmazonBasics are a wide range of products created by the company as alternatives to brand-name goods. In theory, these products are cheaper — and just as high-quality — as the other goods sold on Amazon.
However, the increasing number of people complaining about AmazonBasics electronics catching fire is very concerning. Even worse: Amazon may have known about the problems for years without doing enough to address them.
CNN noted that Amazon reported issues with several of its electronics to the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) multiple times since 2012. The reports centered on issues similar to those noted in the negative reviews.
That said, the company has issued a formal recall on only two AmazonBasics electronics: a space heater and a portable power bank. Many other products, though, have not been recalled.
For example, the AmazonBasics microwave is still for sale despite an instance where it ignited while an 8-year-old was using it. Many other reviews describe similar horror stories.
