Breaking News: Adult Bed Rails Recalled for Asphyxiation Risk

In December 2021, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of nearly 500,000 adult bed rails made by Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare, citing serious entrapment hazards and risk of death by asphyxiation.

The recall comes after two reported deaths. In both incidents, victims were found trapped between the company’s bed rails and their mattresses, which ultimately led to their deaths. CPSC recommends the owners of these products stop using them immediately and contact Drive DeVilbiss for a refund.

What Is an Adult Bed Rail?

Intended for seniors who are unable to get out of bed on their own or who require extra support getting into bed, adult bed rails are products that offer additional stability and security. Such products are also intended to prevent adults from accidentally rolling or falling out of the bed.

Adult bed rails are commonly found attached to beds in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Some adult bed rails are adjustable so that they can better fit the frames of various beds and box springs.

Adult Bed Rail Recall List

The extensive recall involves some 496,100 Drive adult bed rails. These products were purchased from medical supply stores and online through Amazon and Walmart between the years 2007 and 2021.

Four different models of Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare’s Bed Assist Handle and Bed Assist Rail products have been recalled:

  • Bed Assist Handle (sold on Amazon as Home Bed Assist Handle) — Model 15064
  • Bed Assist Rail with Folding Board (sold on Amazon as Home Bed Assist Grab Rail with Bed Board) — Model 15062
  • Home Bed Assist Handle — Model RTL15073
  • Home Bed Assist Handle (sold on Amazon as Adjustable Height Home Bed Assist Handle) — Model RTL15063-ADJ

According to the CPSC, the manufacturer’s name “Drive” and the product’s corresponding model number can be found on a printed label on the product’s metal tubing.
