A Mission to Make the Legal System More Accessible
With a deep understanding of the legal system after attending law school, volunteering legal services to his community, and working as a lawyer at his father’s firm, Jim Sokolove felt his career in law needed to be different.
After seeing that those who needed help the most were often the ones unable to access justice, Jim decided to start a law firm dedicated to ensuring anyone could get the legal help they deserved, regardless of their background.
In 1979, he founded Sokolove Law in Boston — a first step in a long legacy of changing the legal field.
"My mission with the firm is simple,” Jim said. “It’s to provide everyone, regardless of education, background, social status, equal access to the legal system.”
As a pioneer in his field, Jim expanded access to the civil justice system for many who did not know that help was available or who felt like they didn’t have the resources to hire legal help.
From there, he forged a new path in order to reach families who had been harmed — TV advertising. His first commercials aired in 1982 and were among the first legal advertisements to show help was available through mesothelioma lawsuits.
These 30-second video advertisements were able to reach working-class Americans in their homes in a simple way that helped anyone understand their legal options. His ads ended with a way for people to see if they may be entitled to compensation — by calling the toll-free number on the screen.
Because of this straightforward approach and an easy way for people to connect, Jim was able to show that justice is for everyone, not just the wealthy or well-connected.
The ads set Sokolove Law apart from the rest, earning Jim the affectionate nickname of ‘the mesothelioma guy,’ one who would go on to change the landscape of personal injury litigation across the nation.
Creating the First Truly National Mesothelioma Law Firm
With his TV commercials an unprecedented success, Jim soon found himself looking to innovate once more. In the face of such demand, he wanted to answer the call nationwide by partnering with some of the best law firms across the country.

“Men and women working in industrial jobs got ill — fatally ill — by being exposed to asbestos,” Jim explained. “The asbestos companies knew this, and they didn’t inform the workers.”
Millions of workers and their families are believed to have been exposed to this dangerous carcinogen. Sadly, U.S. military veterans make up more than 30% of mesothelioma diagnoses each year.
